I mean seriously...no supertrucker macho man bs...what would you (or do you) do when a trucking company asks you to do something illegal?
I have had 3 separate companies ask me to do something illegal, and they get pissed if I won't do it. I have had dispatchers ask me to falsify my logs, a shop that refused to fix safety sensitive items, and reprimand me when I finally listed them on the DVIR. Most recently, I had a shop demand that I bungee a bad tire to the catwalk, put it in the sleeper birth, or buy the tire. All these companies tout impressive CSA scores and the vigorous effort to keep them low, but then turn around and demand that drivers do illegal stuff. Nowadays, it hurts the company as bad as it hurts the driver due to CSA, so it seems a bit counterproductive to me.
So how have you all handled it, and how did it turn out?
What would you do

Record it when they're advising you to break the law. Blackmail the hell out of them when you raise the issue. Seriously. You have all kinds of bargaining power once you record this behavior.landstar8891 Thanks this.

You're on the wrong forum if you don't want macho man super trucker advice!
Charli Girl Thanks this. -
If you have to ask, you already know the answer. Trust your gut and do what's right. Ultimately, it will always come down to you either way, so I would stand your ground. Don't do anything illegal, whatever goes in or on a truck is not worth a blemish on my license, my life or my freedom. Jmo

That is a good question.. I look forward to watching this thread..
I have not been in that position in the trucking industry, but, have in other ones..
Like, when I was bartending, we were out of a popular drink, and the owner had me pick some up at a grocery store, which is not allowed, I did, and it happened on a few occasions.. there were other things, like serving his nephew who I knew was underage, and stuff.. he was a good boss and treated me well.. so, yes, I did do those things.. but, no matter how much I liked him as a boss or the job, there were things I would not do..
When ,I did construction, there were OSHA rules that we broke, and things, when I got a wood splinter in my eye and scratched my cornea, I didn't report it as happening at work, my boss gave me the money for the doctors and two weeks off with pay.. he did that cause it was better for his insurance and more cost effective for him.. again, he was a good boss and I liked my job, as well as made good money..
I understand rules are rules and the law.is the law.. sometimes it is clearly black and white... Then there is somethings more gray..Chinatown Thanks this. -
Document it and take it to their safety department. If they won't back you up, get the hell out of that company.

And what you just stated,is the PROBLEM with trucking..
It seems to me that 95% of the Dispatchers,Owners,DOT,Log Dept and everyone else for that matter can get away with MURDER...There is not many ''LAWS'' or ''RULES'' to stop this madness...These people smoke weed, pick up hookers, beat there kids, lie, cheat and steal. They can screw you over and manipulate and play every single game there is and still not much Recourse...
All the LAWS and RULES are geared to the drivers.!!!!!...A driver does not cross his ''T'' or dot his ''I'' he is finished and sent under the bus..
It is sad that drivers are not seeing this and are being led to the slaughter house..We are nothing more than being turned out like a New Jersey Crack Hooo...
I feel you are in a tough position. You can quit, put up with the Driver Abuse or go into the cage and fight them and document it all..Myself i would run not walk and find a better position.Keep in mind that it is being ''recorded'' on your report card called CSA 2010...Charli Girl, Truckinchic, 900,000-tons-of-steel and 1 other person Thank this. -
Bungee a tire to the Cat walk is not illegal and a reasonable request.

It is illegal, and you will get a unsecured cargo ticket worth 10 CSA points + the time multiplier (so 30 CSA points.) Bungee cords do not have a rated working strength, and therefore cannot be used to hold anything down. A lot of people think that it's ok to do this, but it's not. DOT has really started cracking down on anything being on the catwalks that isn't permanently affixed to the truck.
