hey everyone, I am a new driver and I learned to drive on a 10 speed and now I got a job driving a Freightliner with a 13 speed tranny. When I was in school, we got these handy charts that showed the shifting speeds for each gear and it was super helpful knowing when to shift.
I am starting to get the hang of shifting the 13 speed but had a few moments where I couldn't get the right gear-especially when I am coming off the freeway to an off ramp and the speed drops real quick.
I was wondering if someone knows the the shifting speeds by heart or has a copy of one of those charts-where it shows what speed correlates with what gear.
I know each truck drives a little different, but if someone could post this info, it would come in real handy.
    Thanks.

    depends on the rear end.,

i personlly don't bother with the spliter unless i'm climbing a hill.

each time ypu press the pedal down. you dump fuel into the engine. more so then if you were to simply stay accelerating.

basically, just drive it as a 9 speed.

You're over-thinking it. Give it a week and you'll know it all by heart without memorizing anything. Listen to the engine, it'll tell you all you want to know. I miss my 13 speed, you've got me a little jealous.

It's actually eaiser to split a gear and will save fuel vs. doing a full downshift and accomplishes the same thing.

Until you get used to it, just downshift it like a 10 speed and split on the up shifts. as you get more comfortable with it, then start downshifting it like a 13 speed. Once you get the engine sounds down right, it will be easy.
I used to be an instructor for a school up in Pa, and I taught my students to pay attention to the sound of the engine when shifting. There isn't always time to look at the tach, and the sound of the engine is the same pretty much regardless of what gear you are in. I know I can't remember the last time I looked at the tach when shifting. It has to be at least 20 years ago.
Hope this helps you a bit. Good luck.

To know the shifting speeds....pay attention to at what speed you upshift. That will give you a rough idea. Do this at your terminal with no traffic a few times till you get it. Then with time you'll know the exact time to shift.

I guess I am overthinking it. I will try to get some practice time this weekend. Its a little nerveracking when I cant get the right gear and the truck starts to stall and theres a whole line of traffic behind me.
So, if you see this slow red cascadia truck-its probably me lol

Of course you know a 13 is 12 forward gears, right ? Normally I refrain from attempting to instruct a newbie about shifting over the internet, but I think I can educate you somewhat. Assuming you're loaded and start in 1st gear, shift thru the first 4 gears, then get in to the "high side" which puts you in 5th direct. Now instead of attempting to "split" 5th,6th,7th,8th, just shift from 5th direct to 6th direct to 7th direct to 8th direct without splitting. Notice it's just like shifting your 10 speed, right ? OK, get that mastered, then you can play with the shifter and "split gears". BTW, once in 8th direct, you'll need to get into 8th O.D. (overdrive), which means you'll have to split. Most trucks will hold at 8th direct if doing 55 or under. This lesson is for you to practice in a short time span, say an hour or so with light traffic. I'll tell you another little secret RE: truck transmissions. If you have a hard time getting into 1st/2nd at a stop light (grinding), put it in 4th, then slip it into 1st/2nd. Easy as pie. Luck to ya'
