colorado is the only state the makes it law to carry them from october 1 to april 30. along the 70 mostly.

oregon, washington, and cali. have some enforcement. when the chain laws are up. or expecting a storm.

rest of the states don't really enforce the issue. but if chains are required. you better have them on. or be parked. which could be awhile.

i wish they could all be like utah. SALT the roads. instead of sand. or nothing at all but a plow.

Utah must have high wheel taxes if they're SALTING instead of SANDING. Yea it gets rid of the ice...for a little bit then it freezes and becomes slicker than snot on a glass door knob. That's like the liquid deicer they're using in the great state of Nebraska now. We'll put it down 48 hours before the storm hits, then it'll snow and dilute the deicer, then we wonder why the roads ice up, then we'll send some moron out in a plow truck and have him spread very little gravel on the roads to give some lucky SOB out of 100 a little traction, then we'll have that same driver drive around with the plow up all day while spreading very little sand across the road and we'll pay the lucky guy $20/hour to act like he's doing something. Oh I just love having a friend who's dad works for the state. And he just loves hearing my gripe on that. Oh they do a lot more than what you think. No they don't.

the roads don't turn to ice. they actually dry out. sorta. it doesn't really get that cold untill january. and that time of year. they use a liquid brine solution instead. lower freeze point.

january is the biggest problem month. with the colder temps. but december has been known to be a pain also., just not as cold.

the plows mostly work at night. around 3 a.m. when the traffic is lessor. during the day. traffic is so heavy for the most part that the snow just gets pounded into mush. and the city boys plow it off to the sides.

there ARE towns in the higher elevations. that do ice up. but the populations are so small. pretty much everyone is in bed at night.

it also helps. that we have a lake. called the great salt lake. salt being the keyword. it supplies all the salt supply for the state during the winter months.

in the summertime. the plants produce salt and ship by train to some of the eastern states. i think there was 2 that buy salt from the one plant. if they're still buying it from the lake.

Hey 893 bedomridr, sitting here going on 22 hrs and still have 14 to go before my appt time. Re-Reading your post and you have a deliteful way of looking at things, I look at numbers and dollar signs, so if my FM dosen,t mind making me sit for all these hours, when, I could have been making paid miles, means I have an attitude. I wonder whsts going to happen when I go to the top with my plight of production loss. Do us a favor!
