I am working overseas and planning to come back to the USA soon and have been thinking about getting into trucking as maybe a husband and wife team. I will turn 60 in a few months and my wife is 52 and neither has any experience.
Anyone here have any advice on a Company to check out that has paid training for the 2 of us or any info on pay.
Are there other people on here that have started at this age ?
My wife is a small Asian woman and is now a US Citizen and also wonders about driving a big truck. She can ride a motorcycle and shift gears and also drives a car and my pickup truck but she is a little nervous about the big trucks.
Thanks for any input !
Dennis

60 yrs. old is relatively young in trucking.
2 companies that train husband/wife teams are Central Refrigerated and CRST.
There are several others that will hire you as a team if you both attend a private or community college CDL school.
Are you planning to return to the Orient when you retire?
Charlie Chinatownblairandgretchen Thanks this. -
at my school there was a ~75 year old man in school... you're never too old
and women are more than capable of driving these things regardlessblairandgretchen Thanks this. -
You are never too old getting in one but you'll sure feel old getting out of one.
RedRover, TROOPER to TRUCKER, gpsman and 4 others Thank this. -
Chinatown, we live in Korea right now and have a home in the Philippines that we will retire someday. I am from Indiana , Kokomo area so wanting to spend time off there but willing to hit the road after training and get a few years in and start looking for the best companies and best pay. I have been here in Korea for 8years and ready to move back to the states. I make good money here but ready for a change. We spend vacation in the Philippines with trips to the states often.
I have always been interested in truck driving and now is a great time for me to get in to it.
Not sure about the pay but I think with us as a team we will be fine.

Chinatown do you know which is best, Central Refrigerator or CRST ? Also which is the best stuff to haul. I just joined this forum today so looking through all the threads and finding great info.
Seen some info on bad area truck stops and so on and would really like to avoid bad areas with the wife.
I think I heard refrigerated trucks are a pain but maybe I am mistaking. We just want to pick up a load and drop it off with minimum headaches, like everyone I'm sure
Maybe you can tell me the best cargo to haul ???
Dennisblairandgretchen Thanks this. -
Very doable if it something you WANT to do....You mentioned headaches in the post above and just about any avenue in trucking is WROUGHT with headaches....lol. You will meet some fine ladies and gentlemen associated with trucking and you will meet some scumbags too...the better people outnumber the bad...but they tend to keep to themselves more and the bad ones are the ones you will remember the longest....lol...GOOD LUCK!

We were in Korea earlier this year; Seoul. Just goofing off & relaxing. I would love to have a home in Philippines, the cost of living is so low there. We have a home in China, cost of living much cheaper than USA, but not as cheap as Philippines. We lived in Tennessee, where I'm from, but changed our residency to Nevada earlier this year.
Personally, I prefer tanker then flatbed. To me, both were easy money and very little hassle. I've done refrigerated and made good money, but it can be a headache. The hardest part of flatbed is load securement, which isn't really hard once you go through load securement training.
Haven't worked for CRST or Central Refrigerated; just know they train husband/wife teams. CRST has the shortest training obligation which is 8 months, then you can move on to another company if you wish.
If you can go to a good private or community college CDL school you will have more options.
One good type driving job for husband/wife is pulling doubles. Conway would probably hire you for that after CDL school. Old Dominion Freight Lines will hire you after you gain 12 months experience OTR. Send a Private Message to blairandgretchen with questions about Old Dominion. They posted recently they run coast-to-coast pulling doubles and make somewhere between $150K & $180K annually.blairandgretchen Thanks this. -
As long as she can pull the seat nearly all the way forward and let most of the air out of the seat she should still be able to drive just fine! LOL I know because that's what I have to do to reach the pedals as I am only 5'2''. She sounds alot like myself riding motorcycles and all. As for your age, I am 52 and been driving for over 24 years. I still LOVE it and hope to continue for many more. Having experienced quite a bit over the years... I have driven a tanker hauling liquid acid, pulled a flatbed, pulled doubles, ( the 24' pups ), hauled produce in a reefer, and now prefer pulling a dry van. No touch freight is less tiring. At my age its tiring enough to drive I dont want to have to load/ unload. Bumping a dock isn't bad but drop & hook loads are the easiest on a tired old body ( talkin bout mine ). LOL Good Luck!
dennisroc, bwt500 and blairandgretchen Thank this. -
I have trained several 60 plus trainees ! Age is just a number. What country is the misses from? Chinatown has a Asian wife(country escapes me) , I married a Filipina . Best advice is get your(s) schooling from a good community college. Far better results and far cheaper ! Johnson county community college is on of the best! Plus no contract. And do lots of homework on your carrier choice. Best of luck!
blairandgretchen and dennisroc Thank this.
