This is a very useful blog. I am heading to maverick for orientation in a couple of weeks. Just wondering if there is any advice you guys can give me? I have an agriculture background. I pulled hotshot loads for myself. I enjoy the life on the road and all the beautiful scenery. Just a little nervous about the training. Also it said in my stuff to bring for orientation I needed a twic card. Do I really need it before I go? Is the driving test very hard? But all-n-all I'm very excited about going. Got the blood to do the job. Also is the truck that I will be assigned on my own, will it be ragged out? Any trainers near Portland, TN. Id like to talk to a trainer near me.

    thanks Kenneth

You don't need the card before going to orientation. All of the trucks are automatics and are pretty well maintained. But as with any truck, you are bound to have some issues. The driving test is simple. You and another new hire will go out with a trainer and dive a few miles, then swap and drive back. Then once you get hired, you will go through the securement schooling.

    Hi Kenneth.
I hired on with Maverick in large part due to this thread and all the participants. I can say that my expectations based on what I had read here were absolutely spot on or even exceeded with what I actually experienced thru orientation, securement training, and over the road training. I'm about the leave out from my house to head to Lafayette, La for the beginning of my 3rd week on my own. It's been great!..I had previous driving experience as well, (15 yrs local) and the truck, trailer, terminals and personnel are all top notch. As for your specific questions, no you don't need a twic card to go thru orientation,,.,they will let you apply for one and help you get it...no driving test, unless you count the simulator...and it was easy, just go slow. Truck is yours and is what is available at the time, be it a 2014 or 2011. I got #12241 and it only had 160000 miles and everything works fine.(knock on wood)...another buddy got a 2012 model and had only 35000 miles and another got a 2012 and it had 257000 miles. there's probably a dozen trainers near you...lots of Tenn. drivers. Good luck -Mike

well with anything I do I want to be the best at it. I took my cdl driving test on my own five years ago and didn't miss a thing. I want to succeed in anything I do. Thanks for all the advice. How many people can I expect to be in training with me? Have a safe drive.

    catdriver7r Thanks this.

I work in tcd division at maverick. Been solo bout 3 weeks or 4 weeks orientation was somewhat intense. My opinion the csrs dont know what is goin on with the loads they send your work assignment thru quallcom. Give u some ridculous times to meet. Sitting right rogers ark at tyson plant waiting on my trailer to get loaded probably be here till late this evening.the load I brought from dexter mo .had appt time of 0800 was there s hour early did not matter they was still 8 hours getting me loaded hurry up and wait.

The simulator they make u take is not bad at all so go slow. Went with a trainer for 4 weeks all together gone the first time right at 7 weeks. They have some bad planning all you can do is your best.
