morehp, I too have an Acert. It went 1.5 million before I overhauled it. I only opened it up because it blew a big cloud of white smoke one day and never stopped. I had a hairline crack @ the top of liner 6 right across the coolant boss. Completely self inflicted kick in the wallet. Never heard of broken rings on an Acert 'til now. Thanks for the updates.

don't know what year his was. i was driving a 99 cat motor. it had the blowby tube on the side of the motor. hooked to some type of valve body. one day it started splattering oil out the tube. cats upgrade was to take the tube off. and replace it with a oil filler cap. the king that had the handle to screw in, to expand the rubber out to lock the cap on. replace the middle valve cover with a vented valve cover and hook the blowby tube back on.

it was a very short time after that engine smoke started up. fast forward to winter time when the engine got torn down and the broken rings discovered.
it was found out that cat was using undersized pistons. least, that was the story.

that motor was 10 years at the time but only had 150,000 miles when the oil started up. 165,000 by the time the engine got torn down. towards the end. the engine wouldn't have oil pressure unless the oil was changed. once every 2 weeks it was getting drained and filled. the blowby was ruining the oil to the point it wouldn't pressurize.

This can happen when someone uses too much ether to start an engine. Some lube shops will ether an engine to get it started after an oil and filter change!

Why? They don't like to put fuel in the filters?

The recommended way for a C-15 is to install dry, and then crank engine to purge air. Cat is worried about contaminates in the fuel you pour into the filter. Its just what it says in the manual.

That would do it but ether has never been anywhere near this engine.

I never knew that, I have always filled the filters prior to installation.

Thats what I do also, but a shop might refer to the manual and say thats the way we do it.

    I didn't mean to imply, just say'in.
Engines with lazy fuel pumps would take forever to reprime, or may not start at all. Then you know what happens... As far as prefilling filters, our fueling drum for filling filters has a filter base built into it with a filter on it. All fuel is pre-filtered before it enters a new filter.

Cat don't recommend to fill the filters, I personally always have, I have a 5gal container set up with a filter base and cat secondary filter and tap attached, I fill this from the bowser and then fill the filters for the truck from this in a reasonably clean environment, done this for years and never had any injector trouble from contaminants.
