South Boston Va is the pits. I live just south of there in rocboro NC. I can see what a pain it would be to drive a big truck around in that place.![]()

Starting at Schneider on Tuesday out of the Charlotte OC. Thank you everybody for your valuable input on this forum. It was instrumental in helping me make a decision about where to get my trucking career started.

Back to the same old same old... here goes:
Headed from VA up to PA today. Made my delivery at a Target DC. Got stacked with 2 preassignments while driving so I already knew what was ahead of me... yep, relays. 2 of them.
First one I had to pick it up - grabbed an empty from the Target DC and headed 50 miles towards some little town in PA. Of course it had to be a live load as well. Didn't take too long though, in and out within an hour and a half. Then 20 miles to Carlisle, stopped and scaled it at the TA, and then dropped it at the Carlisle OC. Sat around there for a while getting a light fixed on the trailer before dropping it, light fixed on my tractor and had him check out 2 of my drive my tires which he said to hold off on until my PM at which point if I'm lucky I might get 8 new tires. No, if I'm lucky, I'll be out of this ###### company truck by then. Enjoyed my meal options a cheeseburger or a cheeseburger... OR A GRILLED CHEESE (ha, didn't expect that did you).
I had a weird 3rd preassignment piled in there to arrive and leave the Carlisle OC, then pick up an empty at a place near Fairless hills. Sat on hold for 20 minutes and finally got through to Charlotte to see what was up with this, why shoudn't I just grab a perfectly good empty out of Carlisle? Got told that we had too many trailers sitting at Rite-Aid, etc., etc. Whatever. Sent in paperwork, fueled, cleaned all my windows and mirrors and lights, then decided to make it to Fairless hills tonight. Bobtailed through what I'm pretty sure was 100 miles of a 2 lane goat path (I kid you not) until I reached the Rite-Aid in Fairless Hills. Closed, of course, as I could have told you it would have been before I even got here. Spent 15 minutes driving to every gate, pulling an Austin Powers at every one, nope, this place is CLOSED as far as I was concerned. Sent exception and drove off. 45 mins left on the 14, don't care.
Got to Fairless Hills drop yard. Look for the trailer I'm supposed to be picking up. It was supposed to be here earlier this afternoon. Trailer is nowhere in sight. Go to the guard shack and ask her if shes seen it come in, nope. Not even anything close to the trailer number I have. **** it, I don't care anymore. Park and will worry about it tomorrow morning.
Assuming it DOES show up, I have a whole awesome 300 miles to look forward to tomorrow before I have to sit all day and night and then deliver at 6am. Hoo-****ing-ray.
Can someone please recommend a route from Fairless Hills PA to Suffolk VA? QC wants me to take 95 pretty much all the way down then hop on 460. Can I go through Delaware? Still not too sure about the bridges and tunnels taking that route. -
Don't think Schneider will pay the toll for the Chesapeake bay bridge tunnel? Not sure about the height either. Sorry things have gone south for ya again. Hopefully choice comes around for ya soon, i know i am counting the days until jan 1st.

As long as you are running loaded you will be fine in the Chesapeake Bridge/Tunnel (US19) It's a 13'6" tunnel (not exactly 13'6", a 13'6" truck will fit so I guess it's around 13'8" EXACT.
If you are empty the trailer sits higher and although it would still probably fit you will set off the over height sensors (I tried taking the I-264 tunnel through Norfolk and set off the 13'6" sensors when I was empty). But I had no problems going over the Chesapeake Bridge/Tunnel loaded.
Just take I-95 down to Wilmington, DE, get off on I-495. You can either get off on US 13 South (I-495 exit 1) and pick up SR 1 where they intersect, or just go straight to SR 1 south and take that down to Dover DE, get off on US 13 S there, then just take that all the way across the bridge/tunnel into the Norfolk area. You WILL NOT be charged for the toll. The QC GPS has the Chesapeake Bridge/Tunnel entered as a "restricted route". That's why it won't route you that way. It IS NOT a restricted route. If we had an air bag dump we'd easily be able to go through all 13'6" tunnels empty, loaded, whatever. You can manually dump the air bags but you're asking the wrong person how to do that LOL Heard that older tractors were relatively easy to release the air bags, but the new Cascadias you can't access the spot you need in order to dump the bags. -
95 to 460 is the way I would run it. Nothing to worry about in Delaware. Take the 495 around Wilmington it's about the same distance and you can run 65mph. Well if your truck goes that fast. Haha. Should be ok since is Sunday except for the traffic goin to the Eagles game in Philly
ETA: that's assuming you won't get reimbursed for running the Chesapeake Bay Bridge -
Follow Jill you'll get in trouble on Chesapeake Bay bridge.

Don't do this. You'll get turned around. Not fun rookie mistake follow Jill

I had a load from Norfolk to Wilton, NY. Wanted to run me all the way around up through Richmond, up to DC, Baltimore, then up 83 to Harrisburg. That route was 180 miles further than taking the tunnel. Of course, Schneider pays you the miles based on going through the tunnel.mickeyrat Thanks this.
