How to do precise backing without damaging the clutch brake???

    Let's say I want to back up 3 feet and only 3 feet, what can I possibly do to avoid any harm to the clutch brake?

    clutch in, shift into reverse, release clutch back up, gas, pop gear into neutral, brake -> Is this sequence the only way to accomplish it?

    Well if you're only going 3feet...you won't need the gas.

    If its only 3 feet, i'd ride the cluch and brake to keep it supper slow and smooth. I know not great for either, but how much do you do it?

    brake light or not at all, clutch in, reverse, cluch out just till it starts to grab...not all the way out...., brake, clutch in

    I dont see how this would damage the cluch brake. it may wear the cluch, but i thought the clutch brake really only activates when the peddle is to the floor.

    If you clutch all the way out it hard to control speed and riding the brake is a lot more jump then riding clutch. IDK, maybe my reverse gear is to fast, but if you want to tap the dock like you'd tap a baby then it seem to be the only way.


    From what i understand, you can disengage the clutch by putting the peddle most of the way down and the clutch brake wont activate.

    clutch brake only works when clutch is depress to floor.

    Thanks for the confirm, that what I thought....so riding the clutch might wear on the clutch, but certainly not the clutch brake.

    Clutch brake is just a small metal ring, aprrox. $20, that you can replace yourself-if you break it.

    Ride the clutch, the problem is, at the end when you are about to stop, how do you take the gear back out to neutral so you can stop??? You've been riding the clutch so I don't know how you can clutch to take the gear out. So the last resort is the tap on the gas so you can move gear back to neutal. If you brake, floor the clutch and take the gear out, it is hurting the clutch brake because you are flooring it when the vehicle is moving.

    Maybe you're truck is different from mine only depress pedal about 1/4 mine will come out of gear

    The clutch is designed with that in mind. There is no way to do a controlled back with "riding the clutch", just don't depress it any more then necessary as you're trying to control movement and speed. Do what you've got to do and let the mechanics worry about the clutch. A clutch's worse enemy is a mechanic who doesn't know how to properly adjust and maintain one.

    To go back 3 feet? There's no way to do that without "riding the clutch," and "riding the brake." But you are only backing for 1.5 seconds, and a fraction of that is with the clutch engaged. Like, what? .5 seconds? Why would you need to give it a little willy to get it out of gear while going 1 mile per hour backward (unless your clutch needs replacing)?

    I call trick question. If I think I am wearing out my truck by using it for 1.5 seconds to go 1 mph backward, then my thinking is well, along the wrong tracks. I should notice something by going through the small town traffic lights I go through, constantly upshifting and downshifting for 20 minutes at a time much more...
