Making move to tanker

    It can hurt you. The guy who trained me has some nerve damage causing him to lose some movement in his hand from a whiplash type neck injury. It was a heavy product like you described. He had to do a quick stop from about 45 MPH. We don't haul it anymore. He said it felt like it lifted the front wheels of the cab up when it hit.

    I like what Ethos said about surge, it is just part of the job. As long as you respect it and stay aware of it you will be fine. My biggest problems with it were when I was on the interstate for a few hundred miles and forgot about it, then got off the interstate and there it was a live and well pushing me around. It just took me a few times of getting smacked around a to maintain my focus.

    I talked to a Tide Water recruiter Carroll. She instructed me to go fill out an application yesterday but had to work late, but any way a company I used to work wants me to come back and be a Mid Night pre loader. The one thing I didn't like was that their pay scale is percentage. You know how that works 22% of nothing is nothing. However I would like to learn LPG. We will see how it goes

    Hey RevKev im putting in a app with them at the decatur terminal. I have a couple of questions but some of them might be answered if i get to them first.
    1. Whats your hometime like? Carrol said prepare to be out 2 weeks but it rarely ever happens.
    2. Hows the equipment? Do the trucks have apus if not are there idle restrictions?
    3. Where do you mainly run out of that terminal?
    4. Do you haul more dry or liquid? when i was at the terminal i only saw 2 liquid tanks and i rarely see any TWT trucks pulling a liquid tank around here.
    5. Hows the pay and bennies?

    I just want to hear these from a drivers mouth. Thanks.

    Okay, as for hometime, I can only speak for my own experience, as I've not really asked other drivers about theirs. I find it to be very good. Since I've had my own truck, I've been home every weekend. As for getting home during the week, if we'd already moved here (currently live in north MS), I would've been home during the week at least a couple nights a week during most if the weeks I've worked here. Yet, they advise ya to carry enough clothes to be out two weeks, but from what I gather at this terminal, you'd just about have to request to be out that long. I'll say this...both the terminal manager & the dispatcher are really good about understanding a driver's family life & needs in regard to that.

    The equipment is good. Late model-to-new Volvos. Mine's an '08, in great shape, only about 184k miles on her. I think it's one of the older ones at our terminal. No APUs, but idling is not an issue. We run elogs using the Peoplenet system.

    As as far as where we run, sorta hard to say. Week before last they got a couple CA runs, but I think that's a rarity. So far I've been to Greenville, SC (on my way there now, actually) three times, been to Michigan twice, Joliet & Lemont, IL, Forest Park, GA, Louisville, KY, and some local runs in north AL. Of course, I've not been here long enough to have been everywhere we run. Not even sure yet where all we do run. lol

    Y'know,...I've never really compared how many dry bulk vs chemical loads I've done. Just guessing, I'd guess mine have been split close to 50/50, there may have been slightly more dry bulk.

    As as for pay & bennies, I think they're both good. Making more here than I did at McElroy. Still have about a month before I can get the health insurance. It's good insurance, just not cheap. But don't get me started on the whole insurance issue in this country right now. lol. As for pay, there are several things for which we get paid in addition to mileage (like load/unload, layover, safety bonus, etc) that really help add to the mileage pay very nicely. :)

    Hey, I'll appreciate the referral very much! If you haven't put the all in yet, just call the terminal & talk to Lee (dispatcher) or David (terminal manager). Either will probably tell you to just stop by, fill out an app there. David will obviously want to meet with you & set up a road test anyway. And don't sweat the road test. I drove & we just talked, sorta getting to know each other.

    Yeah I went and got an app but David was busy so we will meet when I go and drop it off. You like tank better than flat? I drove for maverick flatbed side and I am looking forward to pulling a tank.

    Oh yeah. While I had no complaints with McElroy, I much prefer tanker to flatbed!!

    Glad to see its working out for you Rev. If I could find a solid regional hazmat tank company out here in the PNW like Superior or TWT I would strongly look into them. Until then, I'm liking this flat gig so far. Home every weekend, no drop in pay, might even be making more.
