I wouldn't get the warranty. These companies are quick to take your money, but slow to pay when stuff breaks. I'd save the money, get the truck for $22k and use the cash for the inevitable repairs.

Get a engine oil sample to see if there's any major issues you should be aware of, if they haven't changed the oil already.

Your monthly payments are low enough so you should be able to save good cash for maintenance. The first year of operation will probably bring many repairs. But after two years, you should be able to pay the truck off.

All the best!

Ryder trucks are not any worse or better than any other large fleet, it is the luck of the draw. I used to drive for a fleet that had Ryder and Penske rentals and the rental companies did the least upkeep possible. The thing to remember about rental companies, their goal is to run that truck as cheaply as possible then sell it for the highest possible residual to make their money. They don't make money leasing the trucks but rather at the end when they sell them. With that said, if the truck was a fleet lease and not a daily rental it should be in better shape than a daily rental, also if it was serviced by a smaller terminal that has more time then it will be in better shape. Here in Albuquerque our Ryder shop has about 2,100 trucks they care for with only 20 or so mechanics so things get pushed in and out at a fast pace meaning little things get overlooked or put off where the Ryder shop back home in Scranton Pa only had about 500 trucks to worry about so they were in much better shape.

I am extremely unpleased not to say upset. I went back to take one final look at the truck before moving forward and guess what? The #### truck had different tires than last Friday. They swap for recaps with about 50% on it. So much time spent in looking and waiting to get approved and now this happened. I asked what happened and they flat out lied that the tires was the same....I guess is just a sign from above not to do business with these people. Now what? Go where? Wait for another financing place to get approved? Landstar is already expecting me to show up with the truck....

There are a number of truck dealers around the metroplex. Check The Truckpaper. You can pick up a copy at any truck stop. I have also seen trucks sitting on the side of the road for sale around the area. Take a drive down 67 or 287. You may also check some of the boards in area truck stops.

I will G/MAN. I am in a pickle and as of yesterday I got the call from Landstar recruiter to go for the truck inspection so I could be ready for orientation this coming week. My other issue is that I was getting financed thru Keystone equipment and I am not sure if they could use the same application and approve me for someone else. Seems like they work only with Ryder...
Anyway...I will be driving around and shopping for a safe and not expensive truck.
Are you from the area? Who you drive to ( leased)?

Yeah Ryder is a cheesy company. We have recaps on our trucks and they are constantly blowing. 4 over the last summer. The last one blew the battery box apart and put holes in one of the batteries. Also had one this year take out a fuel line for the reefer.

You do not want a used Ryder truck. Whether it was a rental unit or assigned to one of their dedicated logistics accounts, it has had many, many drivers in the seat. Most of these will flog it mercilessly because its not their truck.

Ryder's maintenance program is worthless as well. If for example an air dryer malfunctions they will bypass it. A truck has an accident due to bald tires (they refuse to change drives before 2/32" in winter ) they will do everything in their power to get different tires on the truck before adjusters see it. They reward the shops for spending the least on repairs, with bonuses for management. Imagine how much priority that gives routine maintenance.

My own truck with 1.2 million miles on the clock has much less wear and tear in every area, than I've seen on Ryder trucks with 300,000 miles. I would never buy a vehicle from them, unless it were truly an outstanding bargain (and none of theirs are). Think about it...do you want to try to make a living with something that a hundred other drivers have "driven like they stole it"?

I saw something in my email earlier today that stated that Ryder was offering $2,500 toward the purchase of any class 8 truck.
