Guys, I currently own a small flat bed OTR company. We have 5 trucks, and I'm currently looking to get into the car hauling. How difficult is it and how is the money? I hear its great, guys are telling me they're grossing $11k/week on 1 rig!! Is that realistic, or are they just a bunch of truck stop cowboys telling stories? What can I really expect?

from what some of the guys that do it told me. you have to have a 9 to an 11 car carrier to make anything. so I don't know if you want to invest $120k plus into a specialty truck and trailer that can only hual on type product. other then that. I heard the same as you. the pay is great.

11k a week for how many miles and how many loads. Here is the scoop, the money isn't bad but its far from great. We haul cars now for rates close to what they were in the 90's. Then you have to factor in the insurance costs equipment costs etc. Another example is you load a new car and on your journey to its location a rock flies up and chips a new car. There goes any where from $300 to $600 out of your pocket for something out of your control. Then say if you yourself actually do damage that is worse,,,,dig deeper till you take $2500 out of your pocket. This isn't to be rude or directed towards you but there is too many that get into this business thinking they are going to get rich only to be let down. Too many people in this industry now plus brokers and the ones that "think" they are car haulers have ruined this industry. Sorry to turn it into a rant but it just came out.

Most people who haul cars are not going to consistently make $11,000/week. $5-7,000 is more realistic. If you have enclosed equipment and are hauling specialized or high end cars, you might come closer to getting the higher rates. Hauling for most dealers and auctions, you are not going to get $11,000/week, for the most part. Rates are about the same or less than they were a decade ago.
