I get the overall message: Stay away from C.R. England haha. All very good advice, thank you all so much!
Also, I ETS out of the Army in June, May if I take my terminal leave. When should I start calling/applying at companies? The Recruiter at C.R. England told me to call him back in April, so I'm thinking about the same time for any company if I decide to get sponsored training?

There's typically a 2-4 week lead time between applying and reporting. Take a couple weeks off to enjoy civilian life and be with your family and friends before you head out again.

The recruiters are the ones in charge of scheduling the schools. Let them guide you on the time frame. Six weeks before start is a good time to apply.

NO NO NO NO NO I went to CR England Richmond IN. They will treat you like an animal, make you pick up trash like a bum and you will learn to eat like a homeless person by the time you get done. then you will owe them 2995 by the time you decide to quit. which you will quit. you Will be treated like a child. cant go out past 11pm, wake up at 2am to catch a bus that will most likely be full (taxi pay time) then if you manage to get through all the BS let them make you wait 12 additional days to test. I went there with a CDL, now im fighting to get it back. CR england had me change my license over to that state to get "hired on" then they told me i had to go thru a 10 day refresher course for $2,995. I said no then i got treated like ####. Decided that i wasnt a mule and didnt sign up for a few more years in the service so i left. now that im home they tell me my CDL is invalid and i have to REtest in Indiana. Im not moving to reclaim my license that i held for almost 3 years. CR England.......Worst decision i ever made. Funny thing i was warned on here "i was hell bent on going" just to get in a job. just my $0.05

CR England could have been a great company only if.......fill in the blank.

They have a beautiful website, good looking trucks, good looking trucks going down the road. You could make money on the lease/fleece deal only if you teamed or trained. And even teaming was iffy, they cut your miles to starvation levels, which was unacceptable during the summer months in my estimation.

The best company for negative paychecks.

Oh yea... Great advice. Get your CDL and EVERY TRUCKING COMPANY WILL BE FALLING OVER THEMSELVES TO HIRE YOU...... now that is funny.......

Most good companies won't hire new drivers coming from CDL mills, unless they sponsor the school.

There are plenty of factors that will determine which company you end up with, how much money you will make, and how you will be treated.

Those people who have great driving records, no police records, and a good work history will be able to look at all of the companies and choose the one with the best record for pay, treatment, and good equipment.

Those who do not have good records (either one) or a bad/spotty work history will be turned down by the better companies and will end up with a crappy company that has poor to moderate pay, usually bullying treatment and not so great equipment.

Know what YOUR value is before deciding to accept the job. Sliding pay scales are for suckers and those with poor records that can't get hired by good companies.

I can honestly say that PRIME INC starts their new drivers at $0.37/mile if the driver wants a full sized condo truck, or $0.43/mile if they accept a lightweight truck. Add another $0.05/mile if you sign up for our Northeast division. That's a possible $0.48/mile for a new (after you go through the Prime driver training program) driver.

Crete/Schafer is another good company with good pay, just a couple cents per mile off the Prime scale, and no sliding scale. They also do not have APU's on their trucks and refuse to allow inverters.

Heartland Express is another good company near the top of the pay scale. I am not sure if they take newbies though.

CR England, Swift, Central, KLLM, PAM, CRST, US Express, USA Truck, and others are not worth looking into unless you just cant get that callback from a good company. There are smaller ones out there, but watch for the 1099 deal.

There wasn't any implication that just becouse you have a CDL that "every trucking company will be falling over themselves to hire you". I believe I was simply telling the original poster that I thought it would be more wise to use his GI bill to pay for privite school versus going with a company school which he could wind up owning money to even after he completes the contract period. I just think that getting your CDL shouldn't have to involve debt (money or time) to anyone, being as there are easier ways to go about it. A CDL doesn't guarantee you a job, but it does give you a pretty good chance at the jobs that do require one.

All the other companies who run their own CDL schools would be a better option if you go that route. Prime, roehl, swift, Stevens, millis, off the top of my head. CRE and CRST have a special place at the bottom of the bucket.I would advise against using your GI bill for a CDL since they are pretty cheap anyway. Save it for a 4 year degree later in life. Best thing to do would be to get financing for school (most carriers have tuition reimbursement and most schools have in house financing) then go to work for a quality company like Maverick.

CR England is a great company if you enjoy being treated like feces and working for free. Seriously I would turn in my CDL before working for them.
