If a driver is flashing his lights how are we supposed to know why they are flashing their lights? 1 flash for cops, 2 flashes to move over, 3 flashes for "howdy driver"? I don't read minds. Haha

Even in my pick-up, I will always flash lights to clear a fellow trucker. If he flashes back to thank me, he is my generation of a trucker. Mike

Yup I think it's common courtesy too, only an idiot would complain about it

Even tho in my earlier post saying not to make too big a deal about it, I always flash passing trucks back over.
I consider it a combination of "a courtesy" and also a momentary "hello" to a fellow trucker.

But I don't do it when they *just clear* my front bumper, like many new drivers do (this is a big pet peeve of mine).
Some seem to be far too quick to do it,, what's the rush? I wait until they're about one truck-length ahead, sometimes more.

I never thought of it as someone rushing me back in but more of a 'it's safe to move in now buddy' sort of a thing, sometimes a truck could have a large protrusion out the back like a crane jib and you can't see it in the mirrors or just plain old bad weather making the view back hard, I dont have any problems judging the distance or anything but when someone flashes me in I'll blink my left n right indicators to say thanks, I feel it keeps up some sort of camaraderie on the road

I have been flashing drivers that they are clear of me since I started driving. I grew up not only with a father who was a truck driver but in a community with rock trucks everywhere. I was always taught that it's not just being courteous but (while in a 4 wheeler) also being respectful. I tend not to do it as much when I have a cb but I do if the driver doesn't respond when I tell him he's clear.

My point was, if the passing truck "just clears" your bumper, it's actually not safe to move back over. That's too soon.
But I do "get it" about the flash meaning "now your clear of me, you decide when ya wanna cut back over".
