Okay, I realize this is a trucking forum, not a computer forum, but I know that there are techies floating around here. I did something to my computers at school. Here's the shortened version. I was doing my online job on my laptop, plugged into the network at school. The program that I was using kept freezing up and was requiring frequent reboots. Well, coming back from a reboot, suddenly I was getting a message that it couldn't acquire an IP address. So I switched to the desktop computer, same network, and everything was fine. Today, same thing, coming back from a reboot and the desktop couldn't acquire an IP address. So I killed two computers, the internet access at least, in two days. Now the laptop will still work if I go outside and pick up the wireless signal.

Isn't the wireless signal the same network? So how come the laptop can acquire an IP address when it is on the wireless signal but not when it is plugged into the hub in my classroom?

If you go into your network connections, disable the connection and then enable it again, it should cure the problem.

To answer your question about wireless vs. hub, they are two different network connections and operate independent of each other. When you were connected to the hub, did you have to make any changes to the network connections to initially make the connection?

What version of Windows are you running?

What brand of Laptop are you running?

    If you have an HP
Check your network connections for a 1394 adapter. Disable. You should only have a LAN and Wi-Fi enabled.

Check your firewall. You may need to configure it for the network. Depending on how strict the IT Admin is on the network you are using.

No, I did not have to make any changes to the connections. The laptop travels between the plugged in network at school, dial up here at my house, and wireless over at my friend's house. I don't have to make any changes anywhere.

Many times, a network admin will have to come in and make changes. Hardware and software. Of course, they make the needed changes on their PC/station and state...that works. Then spend the next week trying to get everyone else up to speed.

There are many things that could be causing this. I just named a couple. You really need to speak with someone who knows about the system you are trying to access. Namely the Network Admin. Otherwise we're just hosing your PC.

The system at my sons school, will not allow them access based purely on the BRAND of firewall and AV they use. Which really sux, cause they use some really cheap/inferior software. And we have to clean his PC every time he comes home.

Somebody else liked my other avatar...so I switched ;) But, I'm working on another.
