    let me get this strait

    you have 3 months OTR, or 40k miles.....and you bought a truck????

    no offence meant here, but it serves ya right.....you should have got to know the industry alittle better before biting the bullet

    truck insurance is hard to find, harder to pay for.....and is much more expensive with little experiance

    I think $700 is cheap for your situation. Plus, most companies will not let you go out and get your own freight under there authority even if you do have your own insurance so you may want to check on that. I know some do but not the majority

    Well, along with the insurance problems and lack of experience there seems to be an additional misconception. When you sign a lease agreement with a carrier you dedicate your equipment to that carrier and therefore cannot haul loads outside of that contract. In most cases the carrier will provide the bobtail and liability insurance and you would provide the physical damage....I don't mean any disrespect either but I have to ask "What were you thinking"...I truly hope you are able to succeed but with the lack of experience involved with everything you've indicated I'm afraid your gonna learn the hard way....
    I wish you luck.....you're gonna need it.....

    Hi Gang..

    For those that didn't read my first post, I'm the proud owner of a Volvo I bought from the bank to help my brother. I'm gettin' stoked over the idea of trying to operate this thing.

    Got the CDL thing all figured out. I don't have one yet but understand the process. No worries here. I'll end up with one with literally zero OTR experience - scary but exciting.

    a) Because of my bro's health issues, the truck has sat for a year or so and has no insurance. What type of insurance can I expect to need if I try to o/o this thing? What might it cost? Can I buy insurance only for the "times it is operating."

    b) Trailer: Can i operate it without a trailer and haul other folks' stuff around or should I plan to get a flatbed, refer, van, whatever. If I need a trailer, what would you rec. for a total newbie that just wants to get a feel for the biz - Flatbed, box, refer, etc.

    I realize this all sounds funny but I'm having a blast going through it all. I'm not too interested in making $ (I'm a small business owner already) but don't want to spend tens of thousands of $ just to run around the country for a few months - get it?

    In a nutshell, I'm doing what everyone says NOT to do because I ended up with a truck without planning on it. I want to operate it literally for a few months a year and need to minimize how much it will cost me. I can't imagine trying to turn a profit and don't expect too, just don't want to spend more money than I have to.

    Thanks in advance, laughs...

    I would lease it to a bigger company. That way you don't have to worry about cargo and liability insurance. You probably couldn't get cargo and liability insurance because you have no experience. You will have to get bobtail insurance. That doesn't cost hardly anything. If you lease, they pay cargo and liability, they find your loads, and you just run. Leasing is that simple. Nothing to it, their numbers, their name, and their loads. This is a short term plan. Get your feet wet and experience this way. You won't make a whole lot of money, you already know that. Good luck.
