I just started driving a expeditor cargo van locally and must say I love it. Compared to driving a big rig it doesn't even feel like work. No waiting at shippers/receivers to get loaded/unloaded, no logbooks, no weight stations, no DOT inspections, no weight restricted roads to worry about, no low bridges. My only regret is not getting into this line of work sooner. I would like to do some OTR long distance stuff but have one concern: How do you guys set up sleeping arrangements in a cargo van? I have a twin size mattress but obviously can't take it as it would take up too much cargo room.

I've seen this with my own eyes..the flying hook in phoenix it was 108°F in the shade

    OP:

I've seen sprinter drivers with custom built beds, high dollar folding sofas, foam mattresses, air mattress, folding cots and multiple things in between...it is all about just how comfortable you want to be..do a quick google search you'll find some great ideas..good luck.

    You sleep on the floor.

For local work, it seems to be a good thing, home every night and making more than minimal wage. But OTR in a van, did that and hated it. Unless you get paid percentage and the company actually charges real money for the load, you can starve quickly.

How long did you do it? Were you an O/O with your own van? What did you make in a typical week and how many miles did you run?

Long enough to know to move to something else to make more money.

I owned my own van, no payments it was bought with cash and it was cheap. My first year gross was over $65k. But since there too many little mom and pop companies getting involved, the work dropped off within a year.

    My typical week?

There wasn't any, ever week was different and because I was on percentage of the gross, I didn't care if it was 5 miles or 500 miles, it was the amount of money that the run made that counted.

$65k a year gross is not bad at all. What company were you leased on with? Like I said this line of work is so much easier and better than the hassles of big rig driving. To each their own.
