5? Talk about dredging up a dead thread...
Pullleaze! 7 mpg ain't hard to make in something that doesn't resemble the broad side of a barn. 8 isn't either. A lot of our trucks are bringing in 9's.
Keep your left door shut, and put a leash on your right foot.
Pretty much 8th grade arithemetic. Even Jethro Bodine could figure this one out. Since remedial math is in order once again. Take 140,000 miles per year for example, and $4 per gallon to make it easy...
At 5 mpg... that's 28,000 gallons of fuel per year, and at 8 mpg that's 17,500 gallons of fuel per year. The difference at $4 per gallon is about $42,000 you could put in your pocket every year. Yep... that large car is an expensive habit. Rat Pack's 7mpg is a bad week for me.
Who's worried? The loads and rate are fine, my mode of living is my business, and the figures are derived by applying elementary arithmetic. Something many folks around here seem to be woefully lacking in. Personally I don't like leaving THOUSANDS of dollars every year lying on the table. Either they can go into your pocket or the oil company investor's pockets...
Prime's lease deal. The math gets done.

Rates haven't gone up in years..... I'm not sure I would describe them as fine.
less miles @ higher rate = fineJayTee Thanks this. -

7mpg is piss poor for our trucks. I can get 8 without even trying by just running 55mph. Ive had a couple 10 plus mpg weeks with balanced loads, good terrains, weather, and progressive shifting..
Oh, I'm a company driver and I average about an extra 3-5 cents per mile extra a week in fuel bonus. That's at least almost an extra $4 to 6 thousand in pay a year. -
Left door shut...mine is more so than yours is you don't run the miles we run and hang out at truck stops. Leash on you're right foot? Maybe you're a freight hauler so were not com pairing apples to apples. I can give you that is still rather lose .5mpgand run another 20,000 miles a year at 1.60/mile than save few gallons of diesel
140,000/year? Before the truck #### out and when I go back I'll be on pace for 200,000 in a year. At 3.5mpg. You do the math on my fuel bill. Have you crapped a golden Twinkie yet?
Money on the table for fuel. Hmmm...okay you run 52...average 8mpg overall. Legally that puts you at 3000/week for you're miles given you drop and hook everything. Your fuel bill over the course of the year your fuel bill is $78000. Let's say you're paid 1.60/mile to the truck. Your gross comes to 249600-78000 for fuel you're left with 171600 for truck payment and other expenses and your wage not counting taxes.
Truck b runs 63 and gets 6mpg. Let's say exact same scenario. He runs 4158/week. That's 216216 miles/year. He burns 36036 gallons of fuel at $144144. Total gross making 1.60/mile? 345945.6 after fuel he clears $201801.6. See where I'm coming from? The extra fuel savings over running that slow is trumped by the number of miles. I see a lot of prime trucks taking their sweet ### time saving fuel. That's their porogative I'll run my miles burn some more fuel and call it good. Even with what I paid in fuel that last week my check covered all my payments. The next 3 weeks would've been profit. My fuel is taken right out of my gross. I get what's left after trailer rental (dispatch is included in that) and I'm not paid flat rate I'm paid prorated over 50k. My loads are usually 52-54k and that's roughly 87k gross dragging around a parachute.
You can talk about business but 7mpg isn't bad. 3.5 with as hard as my truck runs isn't horrible when you figure the weight I'm dragging around, running a long hood, and my HP rating as opposed to what you're running. Oh forgot I don't run singles either duals all the way around. Everybody gets hung up on fuel this fuel that. They don't bother to look at the line when they're actually hurting themselves by saving instead of turning some miles. 7mpg is a good fuel number.#Especially if you're running 65+ -
Give up 379. The Prime folks will always claim that @$1500 a week take home is a great living mate. Have no idea on what is out there, should they choose to open their eyes. Thus why Prime etc, will always have folks lining up to flease a truck from them.
My MPG is junk, but my rates are a telephone number to them, so it's all relevant isnt it.
Please try to teach me math, after doing this for over 20yrs, I think I have it down by now, but then again, I can use my fingers to know a good rate from a bad one too. Plated at 117k lbs, I can guarantee my net is still a boat load more than anyone at Prime etc. Read the threads too much to know differently.
And 55mph in some states should get you a ticket IMHO. Dangerous, but understand that its the only way you can make a living.....
Martinmilskired, 379exhd and passingthru69 Thank this. -

IMHO driving 55 is great.
You have to be either blind, non attentive, a moron or have zero spacial recognition to find a 55 mph truck a hazard.
im pretty sure it's a space problem since the majority of the trucks running 70 plus can't maintain their lane. Theyre all over the place. -
Amen!!!!!!!!!! -
Martin I do believe you are right. Taking home $1500 a week isn't bad money IMO. As long as that's what you're clearing in profit. My check the first week covers my operatng cost FOR THE MONTH. The next 3 weeks can go directly into my personal account for the most part. I'm plated up there at 90k my fuel milage is still probably lower than yours then again I can't say for sure. I'm sure you bring home more than I do with less work. I'm sure some prime drivers make a better hourly wage than I do that's fine with me. I don't mind working my butt off because I'm not working. I love what I do. I guess getting people to realize total revenue trums saved fuel will never work. I guess the stuff in the accronym section was right.
Take care martin thanks for the advise be safe out there.
