I have a Compaq that I bought 3 years ago and it's still running strong.

I use it so much I've worn through the coating on the touchpad. (still works)

    It's my second compaq unit.

    Toshiba Satellite A215
Is rated the best for cheap laptops..
You can configure it many different ways but something like this would be sufficient..
    http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=8221590

No more then what you are going to use it for spending anymore would be just wasting your money.. But if you are into throwing money feel free to spend more. Or better yet just give me the extra amount you would be wasting :biggrin_25519:..

Really need to watch out for sites who rate items but also advertise for them.. You will not get the truth...

    Here is some good reading
    http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/...ws-style-and-features/laptops-latest-news.htm

(go buy consumer report from the bookstore and you will see the Satellite A215 as number 1 for cheap laptops)

I have a Gateway laptop that I bought 5 years ago and still is working.
This laptop has been dropped, thrown around, slammed against the dash numerous times under hard breaking. The LCD screen has busted off the laptop and was just hanging from the wire. went and purchased some door hinges from the store and Superglue it back on.. LOL this laptop has been threw it all and still working just fine.. I only paid like $500 for it back then and worth every penny... I did my research back then and at the time it was rated number one (by honest sites that don't take money for sponsorship) and got my moneys worth..

AGAIN, don't spend $1500, for what you are going to use it for you would be just wasting your money.

Uhm... are you running XP or Vista? Even with XP, you should have AT LEAST 1 gig of ram. 512 just doesn't cut it any more. They shouldn't sell laptops with such little ram.

Did you get a dual core? It's much faster than the original P4 architecture. Laptops are slower than desktops.

    I hope you're not disappointed.

If you're running Vista, you MUST HAVE 2 gigs of ram MINIMUM!!!!

It's running XP.. which I like. I can upgrade the memery to 2 Gigs for only $29, which I will do. Me and Vista don't get along very well, and I don't know why.

And yes, it has been upgraded to a dual processor.

Unless you are multi tasking with a many big programs XP runs just fine on 512. I use to run Delorme Street Atlas with GPS, Driver Daily Log, MS Excel, Thunderbird, and an air card all at the same time with a Thinkpad T23, PIII 1Ghz and 512.

Would 1G be nice, yes, but do you really need it for XP no.

For a truckers basic laptop a P4 will be good. Unless you plan to edit photos, rip and convert music or video.

That's your opinion. I don't agree with it. Anything less than a gig and the computer, ESPECIALLY a laptop, is very slow and annoying.

Glad you can upgrade the ram for cheap, GuysLady!! Sounds like a great deal :)

Perhapas not software as in programs but it will have more background processes running in the background.(also could be considered programs lol) but a laptop will have things such as power management (desktop does as well but not fully used)

The Desktop around 29 running processes
and the Laptop around 50 running processes

Some laptops have limited access when dealing with power management so it is difficult to limit running processes.
