So, I'm not a trucker yet - it will be a few years before I can sell my business & property and go OTR. I am a planner though, so I went to the dealership to get a sense of the space I'd be working with.
HOLY COW! This truck is HUGE inside with the 72" sleeper. It's waaay bigger than I'd imagined. The fit and finish was like a nice auto. The truck was also very well planned out inside. I've only seen the inside of a truck once before - it was years ago and was an old w900. That truck was nice, but it didn't make the impression on me that this one did. I would have no trouble living out of one of these.
What was interesting, is that I went in asking to see a W900, but they didn't have one and don't stock them. The guy said that they aren't allowed in Cali, so because we are so close they don't bother. I thought that was still the "flagship"? Are they going to update the w900 to be legal in Cali? I had it in my mind to go old school with the 900, but man, this 680 was incredible inside and out.
And yes, thanks to this forum's advice, I will be a company driver for 6 months before buying my own rig.
T680 First Impressions - and what's up with the w900??

The W900 is still legal in cali long as it has emissions of 08' or newer.

the radio was talking last year that the w900 was being discontinued. with stricter standards for fuel mileage. the w900 isn't aredynamic.
the people, however, keep saying they are still around at the dealers. -

Still selling them.I do believe I did hear somewhere they are discontinuing the 86" sleeper but the w900 will be around for awhile. -
How mechanically inclined are you?
Do you NEED a new truck to start out in?
What type of freight are you going to be hauling?
What lanes are you going to concentrate on?
Are you going to start off with your own authority, or lease to someone?
I'm just trying to understand where you're coming from and where you're trying to go. -

If you are potentially going to run California or some of the ports, disregard this entirely...but if I were you, I would go with a one-owner pre-emissions (2004 or older) truck, find a reputable shop, and have them go through it and make it like-new.
Or, if you really want a new truck and the money is no option, look into a glider. You can put a pre-emissions motor in and not deal with the EGR, DPF, and other issues with the newer 'compliant' motors.
Talk to your accountant about the tax benefits of each avenue of approach (including a new truck).
Personally, I have heard of too many maintenance issues with the newer emissions motors, and a lack of decent fuel mileage as well.
Hooking up with someone for the first few months or year is a good idea to ease into the business, you can get your feet wet and have someone mentor you. Just be sure to legally protect yourself on any lease deal.
Good luck and God Bless -Cetane+ Thanks this. -
The difference between PACCAR dealers now and 25 years ago is amazing. Used to be there was true customer service, and even as a one - truck O/O you could get just about whatever paint scheme, motor, driveline, and option you wanted.
Now, if you want anything even slightly out of the ordinary, you better be a 500+ truck fleet...not to mention that the last few new Kenworths I saw had paint that looked like a 5 year old got a hold of the spray gun. Orange peel beyond belief, runs here and there....though the W900 with the 86" sleeper was impressive inside. Of course, the air vents for the HVAC were the same ones that are in my '79 K100...why they never went to a wemac air vent like you find on higher quality airliners or business jets is beyond me.Cetane+ Thanks this. -
Wings - this was just a preliminary visit to get the picture right in my head. I'm still a few years out from selling it all and retiring from current life. So if they are already on the oust now with the kw dealer, well - that trend is likely to continue. I went in wanting to see both, but kind of partial to the w900. The t680 quickly got me over my disappointment. I could very easily live in this unit. When you say "lease deal" - are you refering to leasing on to a company (as I plan to do initially)? or are you refering to the purchase / lease of the truck (I will be doing this from savings)?
