03 Freightliner Coulmbia rear brake shoes measure 8" wide. Replacement shoes & drums that a parts house is trying to sell me are all for shoes that are 7" wide. I haul a reefer with meat loads which is always pretty heavy and go to Washington & Pennsylvania a lot. The guy at the parts house doesn't know what it is like when you drop off cabbage hill with a heavy load. I think that I need to go back with 8" brakes but they are telling me the 7" ones will work. I called Freightliner and they recommend putting the 8" ones back on it. Looking for some experienced advise here please.

Freightliner says 8", go with 8".
robbiehorn Thanks this. -
why dont you just go to the dealer and get the brakes? they cant be too much more expensive. personally id go with 8, that extra inch will acount for a total of 4 inches lost on braking friction, 4 inches is alot.

Well today we learn that size matters, 8 inches is better than 7,

you can never have too much brakes , i dont know how prices are in US
but here larger brakes are just little bit more expensive , so in my opinion only largest are enough, my mercedes have 8,4inch on front axles and 10.6inch back and price is very similar maybe 20$ per wheel more -
Just bought 4 new 16.5x 8 drums from Rush Truck Centers for $764.12 with tax. They were $26 a drum cheaper than Freightliner and they had them in stock.
