okay, here it s, I have been OTR hazmat tanker for 8 years. I have an opportunity to buy a really good truck low miles and sign it on with a good company semi local. their drivers average 2.30 a mile. $5000 gross a week, around 1800-2400 net. Or I also have an opportunity to work for a local company making 24.00 an hour. Home every night and benefits plus union. The local guys average $1300 gross a week with drop and extra pays. and work about 9 hours a day. Easy no touch freight and just moving trailers around from site to site Plants are 50 miles apart. I am very torn between the two. I am 42 now so Im getting older. I really need some advise guys and gals. The wife wants me to take the local. my wallet tells me to buy the truck, "cash no truck payments" Its a 2003 KW T-2000 with 230,000 miles on a rebuilt Cat. Truck is very nice. Passed a DOT last week. So its inspected. My price is $15,000 cash. I would still be home on weekends. But I would have to buy Health coverage for wife and I out of pocket. This is really taking a toll on my mental health, I don't want to make the wrong choice. But I only have three days to give an answer on the local job. I would like your honest opinions please. Thanks
I have a very important question: O/O or local driving job?

think of it this way, good deals on trucks come along frequently enough. but how often does a local job pop up that compares to this one? if it's as good as you say it is, that's gotta be the best I've ever heard of.
furthermore, keep in mind that number of 1800 plus isn't the true net either. trucks are expensive to keep running, and taxes gotta be paid, and health insurance isn't cheap either. -
With the union job you're probably vested for a pension after 5 years & a full pension after 20 years. Couple the union pension with Social Security and you have a very comfortable retirement life. You can retire at 62 with the union pension then a few years later add Social Security. Another option is work the union job until you're eligible for Social Security and then retire with even a larger union pension plus Social Security.

what i would do is take the local sounds pretty good youll actually have a life and enjoy the family i think everyone would like their own rig but if you can make decent $$ and be home why not take the local we are not getting younger,,,own rig more money ok also more stress and more expenses and unexpected expenses thats my two cents good luck why what ever your decision is

I agree take the local job you don't want to start having to deal with all the headaches of owning your truck and getting own insurances, repairs and all that now. take the Good paying home every night I mean 8 to 9 hundred a week and be around wife daily is a great deal most would love that one in a heart beat.
The qulity of life is better than extra cash in the bank any day and besides the deals on trucks come by all the time -
Buy truck for cash and park it for now; take local job.
Give the local job some time, at least six months..
Keep your options open. -
I wouldn't touch that T-2000.......
Chinatown Thanks this. -
Just got a call tonight from a buddy; we both hauled mail--$24/hr. Laid off. He had a truck, a '96 Pete w/3406 Cat at home. Has been with Landstar since, a little over two years now. Very happy with them.
That is, he had his $24/hr union job hauling mail and when it went away put his paid-for truck to work at Landstar.
Best of both worlds.Last edited: Dec 7, 2013

Go local. Stay away from buying. It seems great until something breaks. Go local....

IF I had the choice, it would be local, you can make more money in the long run plus you get to be at home every night.
