I'm busy, I'm in three other threads right now. I rarely get a chance to get on here and the only reason I'm here is the fact that I'm procrastinating about cleaning up my house and getting started on a finals paper. I mentioned I would cite my references; you had but to ask.
If you want proof, here's a few I used for a paper not too long ago.
I'll even submit the paper, if you like- it received a good grade.
These are upbeat reports, with Popmech, Darpa and MIT papers. You have to read between the lines and bear in mind that all of these organizations are trying to get their "fair" share of what little grant money is available.
"12 most important facts about self-driving cars" - will give you the best all around, generic and general work up of the challanges with only automated four wheelers. This will be a continuing trend because no one, as far as I know, from any reputable university, organization or business is seriously considering automating semi's. Written by: Andrew Del-Colle. 10/8/13
"The car that drives itself" - here's your Google car. Albeit an almost 4 year old paper, it still gives insightful facts about the Google cars operation. Written by: Larry Webster. 10/18/10
"DARPA Grand Challenge winner" - It's a piece on "Stanly the Robot" who was the first true proof of concept on automated vehicle. Written by: Steve Russell. 1/9/06
"DARPA challenge announcement" - Very recent, DARPA issuing a further challenge for automation of technical and IT systems. This article is linked to by many other challenges, and if you read the grants goals and objectives, automation of vehicles IS included. Very easily taken in subtext is "We have no idea what to do. Here's money, make it work." 10/22/13
"Stanford's new driver-less car." - Old, outdated and still, somehow, useful (like most of the truckers on this forum, ha!) Good information on the early stages of automation. Written by: Kate Greene. 7/15/07
There you go, chicken little.
Keep being nervous about automated CMV's. Totally ignore the fact that railroads are raking the trucking industry over the coals (or at least the drivers.) That's true trucker logic, I tells ya.

And by the way, I don't appreciate the barb from a guy who isn't even a trucker yet, but has the ability to tell me who is one- that some magical beneficiary organization is going to come down from the heavens with dump trucks of grant money to fund a project to nowhere.

But the fact that you've provided no relevant links demonstrates your lack of credentials in this subject regardless of your claims. None of the articles you posted say that the technology is beyond 5 to 10 years away. All you've done is grab a few links and paste then as bona fide references. Perhaps you should have read them first. I'll ignore the cheap shot at the end of your post about "chicken little", that speaks volumes about your lack of intellectual ability to debate and discuss this topic rationally.

Sib, quit stiring the pot.
You're starting the cheap shot's, don't be surprised when one comes your way.
Stay out of the trucking industry, it will do all of us favors.
I'm out.Skydivedavec Thanks this. -
Isn't the the purpose of an internet forum to "stir the pot" i.e. to encourage and foster open debate.
Where in any of my posts is there a cheap-shot? Was it not you who called me "chicken little" for even asking this question.
Odd how your signature suggests everyone grow a thicker skin (of course other than yourself).
Perhaps, you need a healthy dose of your own advice first my friend.

There are all kinds of technologies that are predicted to be the next thing... that die on the magazine page. We're all supposed to be driving flying cars now. Yeah.
This is still the kind of stuff DARPA is funding for military apps... and have been for 40 years without producing one fieldable unit. This is still very much in the stage of research. The hardware required to do it is well beyond what Google is playing with in capability and cost.Lux Prometheus and Siberius Thank this. -
Really all of these are just predictions ... and numerous studies have demonstrated the extreme variability of outcomes when a bunch of "experts" predict something. -
Uh oh.... I just found it....
Apple has already beat Google to the punch.
The future is HERE!

I think...... don't have any proof , links , or info on the subject at all. But since it's been brought up..... I think we are years away from any workable automation for cars or trucks...my simple reason being we don't have the money to keep up the infrastructure ( roads/bridges/ tunnels etc) we have now.... lots of things have to happen before we see anything like that become the norm.... I'm not saying it's not possible, when I was a kid talk about going into space was science-fiction..much less going to the moon. But we made it there and back..so anything is possible I guess....I just hope that the powers that be leave this up to private industry to research/design/test ...then implement.
