So they don't really "pay the fuel tax", they pay any amount owing at the end of the quarter.

Those are two very different things.

Maybe I will be wrong but I think the fact that there will be guys who will jump on this may likely spell the beginning of the end for there high paying company tractor trailer driver jobs. Seems to be the trend with a lot of the good paying company driver jobs like most of the good gas hauling companies did. Why pay a guy a good wage and benefits when they can get guys to run there freight for peanuts.

    tax

not really, the common phrase" we pay the fuel tax" has always meant they pay any additional fuel tax owed for the quarter. heres how this makes it a help to the owner op. say for example you live in a state with a lower fuel tax, of say 15 cents a gallon and drive most of your miles in adjoining state with a 30 cents a gallon tax. the pump price might be 15 cents a gallon cheaper in your home state and if you bought the majority of fuel in your home state but drove the majority of miles in the adjoining state you would owe a hefty sum of fuel taxfor the quarter, its not unheard of for some to owe 450 or so each quarter.

when they pay the tax, you can buy fuel where its actually cheaper rather than a method based on subtracting the fuel tax and then seeing who is cheaper.

one method to even out fuel tax is buy fuel in each state you travel , by divided the miles driven by the mpg used for ifta.

last year for example without even trying, I came out with a .48 cents credit on ifta for the year. #### near perfect without even having to , as my lease carrier pays the tax.

you got to be kidding about stopping and fueling at every state. Waste your HOS on Unnecessary fueling. Not going to benefit enough to do that. Might as well have 15 gallon tanks like cars.

Yes thank you I'm aware of how fuel tax works. The statements "we pay the fuel tax" or "fuel taxes paid by the carrier" are misleading.

But as with any milage contract, the revenue and costs are averaged and always to the lowest common denominator.

They don't "pay the fuel tax" because they think so highly of you and think you deserve more (although that's how it's presented) they do it because it works for their advantage.

git rdun45, you really need to do a bit more research before you become a owner /op with your own authority. the guy was wanting fuel tax explained to him in a way he could understand. it may not be necessary to fuel in every state on every trip you make but it helps to keep track so you don't end up owing a bunch of tax.

I can tell by your statement about wasting hos that you are still in a company driver mentality where you have to save every minute you can, instead of a more revenue for the least amount of miles. I avg about 2,000 a week and never approach 70 hours.

and when ya start getting popped for 450 to 500 a quarter for ifta tax, you will learn how to buy fuel and where.

where you live is a prime example, many think buying fuel in Georgia is better than florida, because the pump price is cheaper I Georgia, when in reality the higher fuel tax in florida far offsets the few cents difference at the pump, florida fuel is actually much cheaper.

I bet you also didn't know that used to be when driving across Mississippi you had to show a fuel ticket or pay the fuel tax when leaving the state if ya didn't have ms. fuel stickers. you used to have bingo stamps and/or fuel stickers for each state and also filed an individual fuel tax return for each state, ifta changed that to one return .

frankly, young fellow you aint got near as much of a clue as you think you do, sometimes it is best to read , learn, understand instead of talking.

Actually I wasn't wanting to have fuel tax explained.

I wanted to know what the hell "they pay the fuel tax" meant since anyone that has bothered to pay attention, knows that fuel tax is paid at the pump and included in the pump price and that the various rates are reconciled quarterly.

The statement in question is an outright LIE.
