Why do you think you should get $2/mi or more? Sounds like your a broker. When you call on a load be sure of the TRUE cost/value of the load. You need to understand who your customer is. You can not assume you deserve $2/mi for all runs. I very rarely pay over 1.75/mi and the carriers who carry my loads are happy with the rates the receive. Stop dealing with Brokers and driving for someone else. Use your authority that you applied and paid for. Get ALL of the money on the load. Why would you pay someone 15% of your profit to make a phone call.

Yep, I go round and round with meathead o/o's who think it's smart taking that .85 load just to get out of the area and cover fuel. I tell them, you are just feeding a fire, a fire of ever lower rates. Your better off staying out of those dead areas, and if you get caught in a dry area, don't be afraid to deadhead. Yeah it costs a lot to deadhead, but at least you aren't causing permanent damage to rates everywhere!

It is mostly about supply and demand. Brokers will usually try to sell the load at it's cheapest at first until they really need the truck. If you are getting a lot of calls in a short time from brokers that usually means there is a shortage of trucks. If that is the case you can demand a much higher rate and stick to it. If the first broker you talk to doesn't agree to pay it the next one or the one after usually will. If they have too many carriers calling them for loads and there are too many trucks than you won't have much negotiating power as a carrier unless you have had a longtime relationship with broker and they know your reputation.

I bet you do ALOT of deadheading. Not very smart. Any pay is better than none. You are creating the same problem, but the other way. I hear crazy rates from carriers and laugh at them. When I hear an outrageous rate, I have to ask them if they are brokers. My company DOES NOT do business with brokers. They take too much from the drivers and may not pay the drivers at all. You can't treat every call as a broker. There are very reputable but small manufacturers out there trying to get their product to the public. This includes you and your families. If you charge WAY more than a load is truly worth, then I have to raise my end prices. You have to really know the cost of doing business and what you need to make a profit. Every load is not the same. Different lanes, weights and products effect the cost of a trip. Be realistic, don't hold the trucking industry hostage.

    Here's the True,Real problem nowadays.

Evertyone and their Brother wants to own a trucking company..They give out authority like candy (You csan thank De-regulation for that)

Brokers AND Shippers alike KNOW..(keyword here) KNOW they can get the Load moved at a Subpar rate MOST of the time.

This occurance is mostly handled by the 3pl(broker)......

brokers are CONFIDENT enough to wait on that bottom-feeder truck. The Europeans,Mexicans,Asians,Middle-easterners ALL have operating Authority these days.YEP all of them,And believe me,THEY WORK CHEAP.

So,The only Losers here are the American Truck Driver that knows the streets.........But CANNOT get the rate he needs due to supply and demand, Too many trucks-Not enough freeight.

Now this isnt always the Norm either.......depending on the lane your in.......Hot Freight.......And other Intangibles can get you a good dollar.

But I'll tell ya folks..This is 2013, Its Hard to get the Dollar you need to profit...You Gotta work smart,Work hard and squeeze every last drop of water from that Damp Brokers towel
