    Rubes mighta been a dump---BUT---if U happened to be one of the bunch that worked w/the old man when he was still alive---None of us givev2 ##### about what the place was cuz---The FREIGHT RUBE used broker outta there paid good enough to run outta Jersey--&BOUNCE back from Anywhere for the next one---Good Times--Good Days

    Good thing about dealing with Rube was that you could walk in with the signed bills and he would pull out a roll of hundreds and pay you in cash. I also appreciated the horseshoe shaped bar in the back room after a long day, I don't know how many times I would run in to someone that I knew in there, once I ran in to a guy that I went to school with, kind of like the "Cheers" of Jersey City. I guess it depends on perspective, not very many places to camp out in that neck of the woods.

    and talk about OLD SCHOOL--he was really TRUE TO HIS WORD--if he said it--it was gospel--

    I was thinking about Rube after I posted that, I didn't realize that he wasn't above ground anymore, but as Olhand said, his word was the real McCoy. When you called him, he knew your voice, you didn't need to tell him who you were, if you walked in the door of the place even if he was busy he would raise his hand up and wave, if he wasn't busy, he would step over to the window and shoot the breeze for a few minutes. When you called him the call went something like, "Hey Rube, how are you today, pretty good how about yourself, pretty good, got anything going my way? I've got this load loading in such and such town, no touch to the driver and deliver there in such and such town tomorrow morning and it pays this amount, or I have this load.... Okay, I'll take the such and such and I'll call you when I'm loaded, okay talk to you then." Then you would call him when you were empty. And he dealt with the shippers the same way. There was no trip lease, no confirmation sheet, no contract, no signature. And if you came back in to the truckstop two days later with the signed bills, he would pull out the roll and pay you in cash, no receipt, no signature showing payment, just a "I Thank You", and a "I Appreciate It".
    Find a man to do business with like that today, and this was in Jersey City, New Jersey.

    It was still around as of about a year ago. I had the 'pleasure' of taking a 34 there...

    I spent a weekend at a dirt lot truck stop at the end of Rte. 29 outside Miami some years back and that was hands down the most digusting low down and outright dangerous place I had ever been up until that point, this was 20 odd years ago mind you, but it still remains a nightmare in my head. I backed my reefer up against a telephone pole so I could find a place to eat. There was a ongoing poker game in the back of some ones dry van. Lot lizards day and night. Gunshots at night. Just a gem... I wonder if it's still there? I can't remember the name.

    Is it just me or does Love's have a lot of issues with slow and non-working fuel systems a lot? We fuel about 40% Loves, 40% Pilot/J, and 20% TA/Petro, and it seems like if I'm at a stop with really slow pumps or other issues at the pumps (no window wash supplies, bad card readers, etc), it's almost always a Loves. This morning it was only about 14 degrees at Loves Max Meadows, VA and the pumps would not work. I was the only one trying to fuel, and the guy said they do that sometimes when it gets "cold" and not many are fueling ... WTF? A few weeks ago, it was a Loves who had no hot water for the showers that day. I'm about ready to stop fueling at Loves, but I know if I do, Pilot will go to crap, too.
