I just recently obtained my own authority and I requested a DOT number by adding a trailer , even though I am not going to use the trailer for hauling. My question is, am I subject to the DOT time cards even though I am under 10k pounds, but have a DOT number? Dont want to get any huge fines and I need to know if I must have a log book in the van.

The answer is no to both of your questions. What kind of a license do you have? Also are you gonna transport any hazmat stuff in your van?

    teamgreen1 Thanks this.

Nothing hazardous, and the gross weight of the van is only 7300 lbs. I just have a regular drivers license too, no cdl. If I did have a cdl, would that change things? Because I am contemplating getting one.

If you had a CDL it still wouldn't matter for the business you run since your GVW is under 26000 lbs.

I think that would be the log book, although I've never heard it called a time card. :biggrin_2559:

Yes, I was..I am new to having my own authority..It looks like a time card to me. See why truckers can go nuts with this stuff.

Under 10,000 pounds no logs, CDL, etc. those guys can drive 24 hours straight if needed. Hauling hazmat is totally different, bit I doubt you have the authority or insurance to haul it, and you've already said you don't have the license to haul it. Contact Bigbadbill here, he might be able to get you some work
