I'm looking for a 48' stepdeck to haul big square hay and maybe my machinery sometimes. I've found a 2005 Transcraft Eagle combo and a 2006 Great Dane Combo set up about the same..aluminum wheels, boxes & dump valves. The transcraft is supposed to be an 11' top deck but I talked to Transcraft and they said they all were about 10'6". The Great Dane is supposed to be a 10' top deck according to the owner. I've also seen a couple 1999 Doonan all steel trailers but the rear wheels set a bit farther under the trailer than these do & I want to put a dovetail with fold over ramps in it so I don't like that idea. I also found a pretty good 1996 Trail King all steel but it's pretty bare on options and he wants about as much for it as the others. What are your thoughts on these trailers? I can buy the newer trailer for close to the same money as the older ones.

40ft lower deck is a must to be of any real use.

I own a Great Dane AND a Transcraft stepdeck, mine are 53', but I can tell you given the choice I would prefer the Great Dane if all things were otherwise equal.

I have 38' bottom, 10' top deck and not an issue. Fontain trailer and love it because so light. Only weighs in at 10,400. I think for a step that is light.
Though wish I had container locks.

Honestly, after having been with a company that hauled a fair bit of containers on step decks, I almost wish our trailers didn't. They take out so much securement area that it makes hauling regular freight somewhat more difficult. Of course, I'm kind of OCD when it comes to running my straps/chains right to where I want them, the way I want them, so that might not be as big of an issue for you. What really cracked me up was the main customer we hailed the containers for wanted the cans all the way to the back since their dock plate wasn't long enough to reach inside if the can was on the pin locks, so we rarely used them anyway. :)

It sounds like someone didn't spec the proper trailer or manufacturer.

Cetane+, every load of big squares I've loaded for guys on a step deck needed a load leveler a foot or two behind the neck so I can set two big squares on the top deck and have some support under it because u have to let them hang over each end some and the aluminum ramps can be used as load levelers too.
