An hour isn't checking a truck for safety compliance, it's hunting for something to be able to write you up. And that mentality that's rapidly spreading throughout the enforcement ranks may just keep me from ever climbing back in a truck again. But that's a whole 'nother thread.
Last year I'd loaded at night and had used my magnetic flashlight 'larry' for something or another, and just stuck him to a post as I finished tightening chains. Larry is very bright. So I'm tooling down the road and keep getting high-beamed from behind; not the flash-flash-flash of something wrong, but the turn 'em on and leave 'em on variety. WTH?
So I hit the first place I can find and head back to see what's going on. I find larry still stuck to the post, about waist high, and aimed right into the eyes of passing traffic. OOPS!
OK experienced drivers, post your most recent rookie mistake!

I forgot how much overhang the back of 53" trailers have (if you have the tandems up), so I tried to pull a uie in a VERY tight spot very close to the other trailers. The butt of the trailer ended up scratching the nose of a dropped pup (LOL). Nothing too bad, it's just old metal.

Ok, I will throw one in here. A few years back, when I was still driving for SNI, I was out west somewhere. I dropped a loaded trailer and needed an MT to get my next load. Of course there wasn't one at the place I dropped but, I found one on the street, just down the road. I called it in and SNI said take it. I backed under it, hooked up the lines, did a PTI on it and headed down the road. I was only going a few miles to the Pilot but, I noticed every car that passed me was looking at me like something was wrong. No one tried to get me to stop so, I just kept going. I wasn't until I got off the highway, to the Pilot, that I heard the noise. It than hit me what it was! I pulled into the Pilot but the landing gear caught. So, I got out and rolled them up, like I should have done when I backed under it. What a flippen idiot! Not the first stupid mistake, and definitely not the last.
