Thanks PattyJ for your questions but, my example is a made up example. That is the point, what would the "perfect lease purchase deal" look like? So, you tell me the answer to your questions.
In my opinion a balloon should not be more than $5K The program I speak of, in my opinion, would be one that helps the driver transition from company driver to a business minded O/O. I also feel that an interview should be held with said driver to determine if he/she needs the course or not. But, a simple think like his FM, or a dept, that handles his/her settlement sheet, to just go over them with him/her once a month, or more.
Let's not forget that this is a L/P and the truck still belongs to the company, until driver pays the balloon or finishes the contract period. So, castration is a given. How fast do you think the truck should go?
What's your definition of small improvements?
You tell us what a "perfect" discount would look like on tires, parts and fuel?
As far as the load, everyone has to go through someone to finalize the load hand off. I would guess that the person in this situation would be your FM. Not sure if when a load is taken from a load board, within the company, if that is all automatic or not.

I've been doing a lot of research over the past year and I only found one program that I am considering. Been talking with a couple drivers who have been doing it for years and have made it work well for them.
It's called the Schneider Choice program. You either lease a truck from them, buy a truck from them, or bring in your own. You pick your own freight from their load board. Works a lot like Landstar does, except there aren't any agents.
Payments on a lease truck that is brand new run around $600 a week, used trucks on the lease can be $200 - $300 less per week depending on the truck. I don't know how payments work under the financing side yet, I'll find that out in a few days. A little over $200 a week is taken out for the maintenance account. Whether lease or purchase, you are free to modify the truck as you please, with the understanding that if you terminate the lease, you will be financially responsible for returning it to the way it was when you got it.
Freight rates vary just like on other load boards. You're free to do whatever you want as long as your expenses are covered. I've talked to one driver that lives in the same area I do, and he takes home an average of $1800 a week after all expenses and never leaves Texas. I'm told by several people that freight down there is very plentiful.
I'll post more details and info as I get them, but there is a long thread in the Schneider forum posted by a driver who just started the program a couple months ago and has posted his experience wi the program every couple days. Very good read.
No program is going to be perfect, and EVERY program out there is going to be designed to make the carrier money. That's why they're in business - to make money. The trick is finding a program that doesn't screw over the driver intentionally in the process. The way I see it, picking your own loads from a load board and having fixed expenses leaves it entirely up to the driver whether they succeed or fail. There's no one there to screw you over - it's all on you. I like that. -
What company is this?

How about a system where you do not have to pay for that week you take home time. Let's say no more than 5 days off = no payment anything after 5 days off the counter kicks back in,

If you are responding to Captains statement I think it is the Schneider IC division.
