    There is curbside parking in the Bronx along the Whitestone Expressway, and there are hidey holes in the cargo areas at JFK if you look hard enough. :)

    I'm aware of the rules. NYC doesn't restrict 53' trailers specifically; there is simply a 55' overall truck length limitation. There is also a 'per inch' pressure limitation on tires that few if any road combinations loaded to 80K will be able to comply with on their steer axle even if the total truck length is in compliance. But as posted by others, NYC does not enforce this rule UNLESS a driver is cited for another violation - a collision for example. And yes, I have delivered in each of the boroughs with a truck that exceeded that 55' limitation by almost 25'. And I have received welcome assistance from the fine folks at NYPD with navigating turns in rush hour traffic in Manhattan with a polite wave and courteous nod. It's nowhere near as bad as most would lead you to believe.

    Ah well, I guess you haven't noticed my location change from NC to NEPA. :) The company yard is in Scranton, PA. My tax base will remain in NC for the time being, as I have no official address in PA.

    I'll be running out of NEPA. When I go the o/o route, I am going to be doing it debt free with my own equipment and my own authority. I'm not keen on any L/P contract, especially when I'm not the one controlling what and when I haul, and at what rate.

    Did daycab work from NEPA to NYC myself daily for over 2 years. Always exceeded their maximum vehicle length. NEVER had a problem. As others have stated you will only have an issue if you commit another infraction and they want to throw the book at you.

    That said- obey the truck routes- and study them before you go into the city. They are quite anal about this (although it all depends on time of day-I'd take 5th ave all night between midnight and 5am, but you won't catch me near there during daylight) The fines are exepnsive. They never got me, but several other drivers got nailed for $600+ even after trying to fight it in their kangaroo court.

    Experience and how you develop it means the world in NY. It's takes a different kind of driver that is both physically and mentally able to do NYC without issues daily. Good luck.
