This proves there is no "driver shortage" if companies like Wal-Mart such a deep pool to choose from. Just a shortage of drivers willing to work for crap wages.

nope never worked in the food industry....... never had a desire to operate a hand truck. just long hours the freight was 100% no touch.

I could have written this post dwadpttg got home at 3 am and I'm not due back til Tuesday at noon. I left a Mon-Fri day cab job making at MOST 62K, was LUCKY to get 5 hours in bed (notice I didn't say 5 hours sleep!). Being home every day is great IF you can enjoy it. But what good is it to kill yourself (maybe literally) just to sleep in your own bed, wake up tired, and work another 14 hours to make 2/3 of what you can make here?

Sounds like by the time you get home, you don't have enough time to do what one does at home and get your required rest. Being home every night is great, but not if you are tired all the time. Working for Wal-Mart with weekends off is not gonna happen though, but I'm sure you know that and have considered it. You will make good money and you won't have to wrestle with the "freight" anymore. The most physical thing you will do for Walmart is dolly, slide the tandems, and deal with stubborn roll up doors.

depends on where your at weekends off is not unheard of. Lots of guys like working weekends for the extra pay. Couple guys at my dc with less then 4 years have weekends off. each dc is different just depends on what the gtm opens up.as you that can change every 6 months.,

Also, if you get on a 'program' (and Walmart loves programs) like a 6/3 (6 on, 3 off), you will have rotating days off. This weekend I actually had off Fri Sat and Sun, next week is Sun Mon and Tue, then the following week it'll be Tue Wed and Thu then Thu Fri Sat then Sat Sun and Mon...follow me? So you'll get some weekends, as well as weekdays where you can get things done that you otherwise wouldn't be able to on a weekend like a doctor or dentist appointment or get lucky enough to be off on a Wednesday for your kids concert at school etc. I got on a 6/3 very early, sometimes it takes a while, but it's a great way to balance work/home time. It's less money but the flexibility is awesome, so you could consider applying for a program when one is offered, and many times they're offered right away. 3 guys in my orientation were offered the 6/3 during the class!

In your opinion what schedule pays the best or is it location dependent?

Also I had a nonpreventable in the beginning of the month but almost 3mil miles with no DOT reportable accidents, will this knock me out of contention? The company is already using the dashcam for safety training.

The 5/2 will pay the best, but your start day for your week will be like a Wed, Thu, Fri or Sat so you'll be working every weekend for a long time unless you get lucky to be at a DC where you can get a Monday start. The 6/3 is 18 days LESS per year you will work, but it's not a huge pay cut. Yep it's less but the time off is worth more to me, but the biggest reason I took the program is because of the distance that I live from the DC (4+ hours), so this way I get decent home time without half of it being taken up by travel time, that of course being a personal preference and decision.

As far as your non preventable, I would advise you to look through the thread titled 'Walmart here I come', and search the posts made by 'TomofTX'. He had copied and pasted the requirements from the website. I cannot remember off hand what it says about non-preventables. Could be a problem though but can't remember for sure.
