How can you say, "I havent been in this industry long enough to know whats good or not."

According to your profile info you've been in trucking for 2 yr.
There are people in this forum that have been doing this work 10, 20, 30 plus years.
And you have the arrogance and gall to tell these people that you know all there
    is to know.

Years ago I worked with a gentleman that said to me, "If you think you know everything there is to know about the job you have. Then you need to find yourself a new job."

    Richter,
You need to reconsider being in this industry if you are going to have this kind of attitude toward others in the same industry.

    Let me guess.....

    1. But I save 3/10s on fuel

    2. Don't drive in the snow or off road

    3. Illegal to drive on a flat...

    How did I do ???

I think I'll keep my duels Tks .

    P.S. Got 8 winter lugs that are 100% + 8 summers that are 50%
    in the garage. Nice

This alone shows how ignorant you are, and that you havn't done the reaserch.

Pros, these tires will give you at least .2 mpg over the best lowest rr duels. Thats whe whole point and your missing it. Investment cost is similar since tires cost is slightly less then double for tire (using mich advantage program) but you have to buy rims which are mostly paid for my mich rebates.

MPG is the whole idea, and your leaving it off your pro list.

Less where do to univen inflation between duels. Unless you run an equalizer this is always a problem depending on outside temp. One tire will inflate or deflate mroe based on running temp and cause one to take more load. (Causing wear and more likely blowout)

    As for your cons:
Tread depth. Who cares about treas depth. A tire with a better rubber can last just as long with half the tread. SS last 300k if treated poorly, more if taken care of. Thats the number you should care about.

Traction? Every study ever done on these tires say they handle just as well in bad conditions. I have never had any trouble in snow and ice and find they grip better then my duels did when new. (on old company truck, not current truck) I drive in snow, in ice and never really have trouble keeping up while gripping well. Some driver may say they feel differently, but just as many will say the opposite. Lab testing done by independent 3rd parties does lie. By having a wider tire you have less flex. Less flex means more tire is gripping on the road. The physics and the real life add up imo.

Flats meaning you can limp is BS as well. I drove an estimated 150 miles after a trailer blowout without even knowing. Rim wasn't even damaged when I arrived on 3 tires. The other tires were severely overloaded and still managed to get me there in one piece. This happened at night on the right tire. The night kept me from seeing it. Now i wouldn't recommend going that far with a blown dual or single, but you can. You certainly limp to the next TS. keep in mind dot reg says you cant limp with broken single or duel, so as far as the law ur in violation in either case.

The blowout argument is irrelevant really. How often do you blow tires? Most of the time when you do have a blowout it's because of improperly maintained tires i.e. Under inflation from not checking all 18 tires every time you do a Pretrip. If you only had 10 tires to check and all the valve stems were easily accessible and it only took 3 seconds to check each tire it's a lot easier to do a proper Pretrip so you don't have blow outs. I can count on one hand how many tires I've blown in the last 5 years of driving. And they were all duals.

Unfortunately the industry looses credibility by comparing apples to oranges. They want to show you best case. But best case isnt real world. I fully understand that. Point is, real world is still pretty good. For you, I think the 55r 445 (might be off on the numbers, but the larger SS size) would be a good set up on 22.5 rims. Smaller rims but similar size tire. I'd have to do the math ans know what tires you have now to make sure they would be tall enough, but it could be a good option. If you have a good set of rubber in most cases its not worth buying new rubber just for the heck of it, but when you need new tires, with the rim rebates its pretty close to the same cost. Even if you only get .3 mpg better. that's money for no more investment.

I never said i know everything, but i do more research on fuel economy and tech to help with fuel economy then the average Joe. Maybe I can learn other parts of the industry from you guys....but as for MPG and saving on fuel, many of the experienced truckers dont know much about it.

Def true. The only single i ever blew was the trailer single. It blew because the tire was not maintained. I tire had 60 psi in it when I got the trailer and I aired it up just so i could make it to the terminal. Ont he way there it blew, probably because it lost some air again. This was driver error (I should have stopped at the nearest TS and made them get it fixed there instead of terminal 300 miles away...So I still do have things to learn) and bad maintenance since previous driver left it that way and company denied request to get it fixed closer.

In my driving career, I have had 4 blowouts on duels and one on singles. I have had singles on drives half the time and never blew a SS drive tire.
