Haven't head anyone mention tolls. Gov. Corizine is planning on raising tolls in N J 50% in 2010 again in 2014,2018 & 2022 and would take inflation into account to bail out state debt. Illinois, Ohio and P A have been just as bad. Truckers can't pick up the tab for every stupid decision made by civic leaders.

When the rates are right then the tolls wont matter and if you haul something for someone and you know you have to travel over toll roads then you inform them up front they have to cover them... not a valid argument for a strike... keep it simple...
    brokers rates and fsc

There are brokers making 10- 20000 per week. Blocking highways = Bad idea. Gives drivers an even worse image: Who cares what the pubic thinks... we haul the s#$t.
Can we afford it?: Can we really afford not to???!!!???!!!

the problem with striking or shutting down is the powers that be will have the excuse to declare a national emergency and open the borders to allow mexican company drivers to haul our freight for .11 a mile

it all comes down to the rates. the rates need to come up to compare to the price of every thing else. stop all this third or more party brokers. every thing has come up but the rates. the rates are the same they were in the 70's??? what is wrong with this pic. I am all for a shut down but I remember what happened to all the FAA workers to. when they went on strike. I know of one who became a trucker. I see so many people driving trucks now because they have lost there jobs at GM FORD etc. they all have license so they all think they can drive a truck? they can't! they hold the wheel and hope they don't have to back up very far. Or at all. we need a one day shut down. It would get some attention. but try getting every one to stand together is un-real.

The odds of them finding out are very slim.

The odds of them chasing you for the money are slim.

Guess I have to ask - just WHO is going to start this strike? And who is going to speak for the millions of drivers? Is this person going to be able to speak for OO's/company drivers/union drivers? What actual effect do you believe a total shutdown of the trucking industry is going to cause?
So you're going to strike? I've heard nothing of it, anywhere, and I talk to a lot of drivers. I don't hear about it from a myriad of drivers from a lot of different companies - I have that luxury because our company receives a lot of inbound freight from a lot of different trucking companies, both LTL and long-haul. It comes from company drivers and owner operators.

I've heard this story before - but it never materializes. Even if it does - who is going to pay for it in the end? ALL OF US, INCLUDING YOU AND I. If a total shutdown could actually occur, the economy would be devasted and would have lasting effects that only time - and a lot of it - would be able to "cure". Rail can't cover a total trucking shutdown - they've already admitted they couldn't even come close. Our economy is already headed for the gutter, I must ask, what GOOD is this going to do for the American Consumer? Because, friends, YOU and I ARE the American Consumer. Not just Joe Blow sitting in an office somewhere, all day long. Or Miss May standing behind a government counter. Or the Teenaged Wonder serving you at Jack-in-the-Box, or whatever. We're all in this together. The issues stated are mostly problems with trucking companies. Fuel pricing is obviously not, but if you're a company driver, that isn't all that relevant to you.

I don't condone this kind of thing because it effects the entire American economy, not just the trucking industry. In the end, WE ALL LOSE.

I thought OOIDA was "supposed" to speak for truckers!

Have they ever used their "position" to plan a strike? They charge what, $45 a year for membership, and they have 161,492 current members.

That's $7,267,140 a year from truckers!!! For what? A magazine subscription and tire discount. They can't do more with 7.2 million a year? The services that they call "Benefits" are things you have to have anyways and being a member doesn't get you a different price than if you got that service on your own.

OOIDA members should be pissed more than me. Paying someone else to speak for you and then having nothing said. HAA! Sure, they wrote a letter to the Prez...so what! Sounds like political BS, if you ask me.

7 million could organize a very large group of truckers to drive into DC. I bet that would get more done than a letter to our "leadership!"
