As we all know, trucking isn't good for your health. Especially being a sedentary lifestyle and all. And recently I went to the doc. And he's a creepy guy. So I don't like going much. But I got bad news. I'm going to be on yet another pill. This makes 3. Blood sugar, hypertension and now I have a new issue. And because I can't spell it, I can't tell you what it is. But I'm 37, 250 lbs, 5'11" and now on three meds.
Time for me to act. No more eating the garbage. Doesn't matter how I feel about it. It angers me because I am in better shape than a lot of people out here. It's hereditary, but what I do doesn't help. So on January 1 began a new journey for me. A healthy one. Because I am not dying yet. I also would like full use of my body, especially certain parts. I began by immediately cutting out those bad foods and moving to a better diet. At some point in the future I have decided that I will try and go vegetarian. Not only healthier, but as an animal person, makes me feel better as well. First is the bad food. That's already happening. Next? Smoking.
one step at a time. Luckily, with E-cigarettes, the transition to a non smoker will be a lot easier and I can start it sooner. You can't take everything at once. You'll be miserable. The last piece to the puzzle is more excersize. Walking, using the trailer for "trucker pull ups", and a variety of other things. My goal weight is 200, I have a lot of muscle and between 200-215 was where I felt and looked best.
I'll be updating my progress here, and hopefully a few of you will join in and start 2014 off healthy. Just like our planet, our body is the only one we have. It's not like there is a spare we have laying around.
First weigh in was Jan 1, 2014. 256 pounds. 3 meds. Next month I hope to be in the 240s somewhere.
I will not die early!

ONE POSSIBLE SOLUTION:
Get out of trucking driving and transfer onto the loading docks with the trucking company that you are currently working for, TEMPORARILY FOR 1 FULL YEAR, to get your health and well being back to where it is supposed to be. In addition to working a more physical job on the loading docks, also devise a serious physical fitness and nutrition program at your place of residence. You would have to enlist the help of a physical fitness trainer and nutrition expert who really knows his or her business. AFTER THE 1 FULL YEAR IS UP, then go back to truck driving.
Good luck and happy new year.

Not my business, but are you sure being a vegetarian is a healthy choice. Most of the vegetarians I've ever met look pale and weak like crackheads. Moderation and a well balanced diet may be healthier. I'm thinking about getting back on Adkins type diet myself due to the fact I eat very few vegetables. Good luck with your weight loss.

I smoked 3 packs a day for 21 years and the only way I could quit was cold turkey, but did it.
Best wishes Joseph!Raiderfanatic, dennisroc, Ducks and 3 others Thank this. -
Good for you Joe, now do it! Here's a point to ponder also: If you don't get all this under control then the DOT will throw you out of the truck at a physical near you sometime in the future.
I have mild hypertension from the trucking lifestyle and I'm now on a pill. I have it under control for now and my physical is this morning, wish me luck on that. Point being DOT is starting to consider BMI , sleep apnea and a host of other things that could knock many of us out of the game.......
My doc said the following are driving the hypertension:
Caffeine
Lack of exercise
Sugar
sodium
smoking
BMI / weight
So I grabbed a $50 BP cuff, learned how to use it and check it twice a day....and take a pill along with lifestyle changes like you mentioned. I feel better already and I just got started.
The DOT limits for a 2 year are considerably low at 140 / 90 and of course the BMI. Mine is 27 right now and I'm heading for 25 by summer. Just switching to decaf and switching to artificial sweetener made a big diff over a couple of weeks.
Best of luck hand, try your best to get 30 mins a day exercise even if it means push ups on the sleeper floor.joseph1135, TruckingWolf and blairandgretchen Thank this. -
I've always been in reasonable shape. I'm not "fat", I do have a belly though. I've always been a big guy, muscular, whatever they call it. But after 12 years, and I don't take a lot of time off, I spend months on the road, it takes its toll, and that's what it's doing to me. So like I said, its time for me to really get serious about it. It was originally my New Years resolution, and my visit with the creepy doctor shoved it into high gear. If anything, so I don't have to see him often, ha ha.
