truck wont get up in temperature

It's super cold outside. That's one purpose of a grill cover. There are bug shields and there are winter covers to reduce air flow. Find you a piece of cardboard, raise the hood and stick it in front of the radiator. Cover about 60-70% of it if you can. You can control the temp by the size of cardboard. If it doesn't reach operating temp than use a little bigger cardboard. Just remember to remove it when you leave the frigid area.

 

Old school. I remember having to do that every winter. Simple, but it works really good. If you can't get between the hood and radiator, you can punch a hole in the cardboard at the corners, and use cable ties to hold it on the grill.

 

Extreme cold will do that. If your heat isn't getting hot because of this I suggest putting a winter front on your grille. Or a temp solution which doesn't look very good a big piece of cardboard between screen and the grille on the truck. This should bring your operating temps up more. Remember to take cardboard out or open winter front up if you travel to warmer areas as you don't want to overheat.

 

That is the first sign of a thermostat going bad, go ahead and make arrangements to have it replaced before you overheat and ruin your engine.

 

Not really if he's in cold temperatures. It's really common in these trucks to not get warm in the cold weather..

 

If it was so common for trucks not to come up to normal operating temp. you would see a lot more trucks running with the grille partially covered.

 

It the thermostat been driving is northern Mi and Canada for many years with out a winter front in sub zero weather today engines will make heat. Like the post before said better get them change before they stick close and you overheat. But come on with the hillbilly cardboard winter front looks like trash and you are really not fixing the real cause.

 

Kinda of ashamed to ask this question but I've ran in the harsh Upper Midwest over the last two winters and didn't have a cover on my grill.... As long as I thought the Water Temp was up even in the slightest bit I thought everything was fine as long as the Temp was 10 degrees or below, am I wrong for assuming this?? The truck was a 2012 KW Cummins, my current truck is 2006 KW Cat, and the coldest I've ran it, it was 15 degrees out, still the Temp was around 140 - 150

 

I have run in the -30's and my ISX has no trouble getting up to temp. Even without the winter front. Sounds like you've got a thermostat sticking open. I'd get that fixed right away. Too cool can be as bad as too warm.

If you run a modern fuel injected car too cool, it will not go into closed loop mode and use more fuel.

I'm not up on the emissions systems on rigs, but I'm sure they need the temp.
