Would any of the more experienced truck drivers be able to explain the brake system on a tractor trailer to me? I went to CDL school last summer and am writing a blog about it. The program was shut down and I thought I'd write about it to help others not end up in the same situation as I was.

what kind of help do you need?? brakes on tractor/trailer are air

Why was the school program "shut down"? That's not common or typical. So your blog/story may also not be typical to most.
To explain most of the air brake system in trucks would require far more than a few simple paragraphs.
Too many details to list, and therefore is the reason for typically (on average) 6 week training courses, with a lot of study and hands-on experience involved. -
I am writing about the first time driving and the foot pedal and knobs on the dashboard. I'm confused about the yellow and red knobs. What do they control? One is the parking brake, does the other control the air supply? How does that work?

I know this story is probably not typical, but there are still things I wish I knew before going to CDL school. I was pre-hired by a reputable company, but the school that they contracted for our training was being investigated for fraud. There was absolutely no information on the forum about this school. It's a long story. I just wanted to explain what the knobs were for. I'm not sure if I can post a link to my blog here, if it is against forum rules.

I post this every once in a while so here goes.
Read THIS ====>>>> http://www.sgi.sk.ca/pdf/airbrake_manual.pdf
If you get what's in here, then you won't have an issue explaining it. -
OK, both the "knobs" are also called the "spring brake popout valves".
The red knob is for air supply to the trailer, also known as the emergency line.
The yellow knob is for the tractor air supply and parking (spring brakes).
Pushing them in allows air to be supplied, (yellow to tractor, red to trailer) and will "hold back" the spring brakes so the truck can move forward.
Releasing the knobs (pulling them out) will exhaust all the air to the brake chambers, thus allowing the heavy/strong spring in each brake chamber to activate the parking/emergency brakes.
That's the basics of the yellow/red knobs.
Edit: After I posted, I saw Ridgeline's posting of the SGI Canadian Air Brake Manual.
I highly recommend reading this entire manual, front to back, as I have in the past.
It's an excellent manual that covers the entire air brake system.Last edited: Jan 5, 2014
jalice Thanks this. -
The red knob is for the trailer supply. The yellow is for the tractor parking brakes. If your truck also has a blue knob you can't ever go into California.
KW Cajun Thanks this. -
blue knob????? never heard of it, and why cant you ever go into CA wiht a Blue knob??? -
Because your truck is too #### old.
