Hey everyone,
I know there are many threads that will be likewise to this one. A lot of people have given me a decent amount of information regarding this topic, but one thing always comes into play: location. I live in NY; to be more specific, in the Binghamton-Endicott area. I live about 20-30 miles away from the PA border.
All right. Now, down to brass-tacks....I am looking for a company that will hire a 21 year old recent CDL graduate from a private trucking school, that I fall along the hiring area for (even if it's close, I may be able to get a hiring exception, as long as they hire in most regions of PA - mainly Northern PA). I know that not every company will accept the school that I choose, but I'm looking for hiring area, right now.
I plan to get all of my endorsements (excluding passenger, probably), get a TWIC card, and have a passport. Oh, and I plan to be an OTR driver...if this helps any.
I am interested in these types of hauling (yes, the first is what I'd prefer, the last, well, is last):
1. Tanker
2. Flatbed
3. Reefer/Dry Van
4. Anything else
....yes, I have talked to many people, and have done research on my own. Right now, I am simply looking for other outside suggestions. I'd like the company to be good and/or have a decent reputation, and pay good. I'm not too worried about home time for my first few years.
Thanks everyone who looks at this thread, and decides to chime in with helpful information regarding the information I laid out. I'm pretty sure I hit every aspect that is needed to know, to be able to answer this question!

In that area you can get hired by:
Prime
Ozark Motor Lines
Melton
Those are 3 I know off hand. Chinatown will likely chime in here with more companies and good advice.HauntedSchizo19 Thanks this. -
Yes, Melton Truck Lines is a good choice; "flatbedn" works there!
System Transport(flatbed)
Ryder Logistics(dry van)
Quality Carriers(tanker)
Superior Carriers(tanker)
Schneider Bulk (tanker-call for hiring area)
Western Express (flatbed)
Ceva(dry van)
GSTC Inc. (owned by Heartland Express)
Maverick Transportation(flatbed)HauntedSchizo19 Thanks this. -
thank you! I have been considering Melton. I was thinking about giving them a call because I noticed that the closest terminal is in Ohio. Not too far away, but seeming how you work for them and suggested them, I'm assuming that they hire in my area. I will check out the other 2 companies you've mentioned. I've heard iffy things about prime, but when don't you hear negative comments about companies?
by the way, how do you like working for Melton, and running flatbed? Just curious.
The one thing that gets me is the age requirements sometimes. I see what appears to be a good company, and notice the age requirement. Or the hiring area, but the hiring area I may be able to get by on a little more.
Thanks! -
thanks, Chinatown; you always come in very handy, and I appreciate it! I've been thinking about Schneider for tanker, but the training seems a bit vague before you go solo. That's an option, but a bit down on my list. Superior carriers I am definitely gunna apply to! I will have to look into quality carriers as well. I think I've heard good things about them.
I'm assuming that if the age requirement is greater than my age, I should NOT apply to them? I'm tempted to just say screw it, and apply anyway.Chinatown Thanks this. -
If you don't go with Melton, give System Transport a close look.

Thanks. I will look into System Transports as well!

Many positive comments on here about Melton, System, Superior Carriers. Schneider Bulk has positive comments also.HauntedSchizo19 Thanks this.

I will do some digging on them today, on here. I guess the majority of what I have head on Schneider is on there reefer, O/O, and training. Is there anything on here about Quality Carriers, that you have come across?
Thanks! -
Gstc won't hire right out of school though, they've tightened down on the 2 year minimum experience requirement since Gordon took control of the company back. That and they want a good record. Get that first couple of years in at whatever started company you choose, keep your record free of tickets and wrecks, and you can basically go anywhere.
HauntedSchizo19 Thanks this.
