Howdy, I've been lurking the forum for quite awhile. I had an job that I was happy with transferring cargo between two stores driving an medium sized cargo van around 1200 miles an week. The downsides to this it was minimum wage and I had an co-worker whom I'll just say wasn't the best person to work with, that aside I did this for awhile until recently. Looking towards late March early April I'd like to get my CDL through company training because I personally cannot afford it though I wish I could go that way so I could have more open options for companies to choose from. I know there are companies to avoid and some that are not as bad.
I called up one I was interested in which was Millis but being from California (bad place to be in this industry) they are unable to hire me), next I called Knight and talked to someone in their Refrigerated dept. They currently aren't training in California, and another company is Stevens but I'd rather not be stuck there for 3 years at .28 cents a mile. I'd prefer to do Reefer work for a year and after that and go to the oil fields in my short term plans, if anyone has has any advice besides the "Stay away from the trucking industy" motto that would be useful.
Thanks

Try Central, I maybe starting on the 20th. School for me is in Conley,Ga then they send us to Salt Lake City, Utah for orientation. Only expense you paying is money for food during school & $60 for your cdl. Check them out, they run reefer as well.

Prime will start you at 42-cpm, plus fuel bonus after training. Stay one year after becoming solo-qualified, your driving school tuition is forgiven. Room, and board covered while training in Springfield MO. Prime has plenty of freight running into and out of California, and there is a company-driver 10-western states division based out of Salt Lake.

Your age being 22 is a concern. Make sure you let the companies know. 23 seems to be the magic age. However, if Prime will take you and train you, I believe that is the way I would go. The odds of being killed in an earthquake are much lower here in Missouri.

CRST in Fontana only has an 8 month obligation for CDL training.
Lots of bad press on this forum about CRST, but it's the cheapest, quickest way to get training with a short obligation to the company. Sometimes, you just do what you have to do!TruckDuo Thanks this. -
Agreed, I'm here to drive. Thank you all for the replies.
I'll be 23 by April, Prime looks good as well.

.42 CPM at prime? Really? Wish I'd have known that when I started driving!

Kinda one of those things where it sounds too good to be true.

Prime offered me 35 CPM for their food grade tanker division off the bat. I think your 42 CPM figure might be misconstrued.

IP is correct, Prime starts off at (after training) .42cpm for Reefer Division in LW truck, .39cpm for Flatbed Division, didn't inquire what Tanker starts at. That is the pay prior to any of a few bonuses. And during training after acquiring your CDL, you are guaranteed a minimum of $600 a week.
I start with them in a couple of weeks.
