I will be shopping for a used (2005/6/7) OTR tractor soon, so I would appreciate suggestions as to which make, engine, trans, and rear, I should focus on? Manufacturers that honor remaining warrantee, fuel economy and reliability are the most important considerations. At least I think they are?
I suspect that I'll be running S/E, to Texas and Mid-West regions.
All opinions will be appreciated. Thanks

Well, give us your price ranges. That would help a lot. Second, if you can go for a used freightliner century/columbia with full fairings, detroit 430/470HP condo sleeper.

I wouldn't buy a truck any time soon unless you are already independently wealthy.

Is it that bad out there? I'm not independently wealthy, but I don't have any debt, and I have a few buck$ in the bank. Enough for a 20% down, with a reserve. I haven't driven for a month, and it is/was my intention to lease myself and tractor to one of the larger companies. I am also hoping that companies treat their independent contractors, better than they treat their company drivers. I have only driven OTR for 14 months, so I don't consider myself to have enough experience to operate under my own authority.
I want to work. It's the being screwed I have a problem with. Thanks.

I hate to say this but it's a bloodbath out there. New tractors like 2008 (we're in 2009 models) and new 2007's are still sitting on dealers' lots. You can find 2008 387's for under $110K loaded. I have noticed the 389's are still around $130K. The dealers aren't giving those away. Used tractors are good or bad depending on if you're the buyer or the seller.
I have decide to keep my 379. The offers I got were absolutely ludicrous. One guy told me my asking price was just too high and offered $20K for it. He said that he could buy a 2005 Freightliner with the same tranny and engine for same price I was asking. I told him "Well, go buy the Freightliner if all you care about is price". Two days later his son called and pretended to be someone else (hint: if you're gonna pull that routine, realize caller ID is a standard function even on landlines nowadays) and he told me he had to have my tractor but he could only come up with $18K.

You're going to pay more for a KW or or a Pete. PACCAR makes superior products IMHO. Find what you want and negotiate and don't be ridiculous in your asking price. Everybody's hurting and a lot of sellers, private parties have slashed their asking prices several times to get out from under their rigs or trailers.

The bottom-feeders are out right now getting ready for the next cycle in trucking. So they are trying to get rigs for 50% under or better, just like they way they run their rates. There just has to be a special place in Hell for those guys. :biggrin_25516:

Well Ron Mars is correct as usual :). Ron, please give the specs on your 379. If I think what it is, then 20K is too cheap for that 379. That truck is at least worth 50-60K easy.

Right now China, try the lease from Prime. Look up "Steve and Lo's" threads and you will see he has a lot of info as he is a lease driver for them. While the Freightliner is cheap they are money makers. Good luck and let us know what you did, or got.

It's a '97 with a Series 60 Detroit (yeah I know, should have N-14 Red top like my KW or a Cat but it's a hell of a great engine. Pulls a loaded low-side up grades like there's no stopping it) at 475 Hp. It has the "Big" 13 speed not like the converted 9 to 13's they have now. A, rears are 3.55's. Clean inside and out with a new wet kit, hoist control/tarp control to the left of the driver's seat.

That's with my low-side. I'm going out to take pictures of the trailer for the guy who wants to buy it so I might as well take some of the 379. I don't know about $50-60K but to me it's worth at least $35K.

My dads 98 379 exhd is worth 35k man, and its a 550hp 3406E with a 18718B and 3.55s. Has a rebuilt motor and trans, sorry but 20k is about right for a 97 379 with the green monster under the hood.

I've made comparisons on truckpaper for the same year, same tranny, same engine ect... The average was $30K asking. I asked for $25K. It has a new PTO and wet kit worth about $1500. Oh well, it's gonna take me OTR until I get enough cash for a new 387. Plus it's been in the shop percentage wise less than the KW with the N-14. As long as it earns its keep is all I'm asking from this old bull.:yes2557:
