Swift-owned trailer’s $8 million in pot sets California record
The California Highway Patrol reportedly found $8 million worth of marijuana after pulling over a Swift Transportation-owned truck and trailer on Tuesday, March 11, in Calexico, CA.
The 11,000 pound bust was the largest CHP troopers could recall, the Yuma Sun reported.
“That’s the largest one that I’m aware,” the Sun quoted Sgt. Mark Kirchhof of CHP’s Calexico inspection station.
CHP officers pulled over a 2001 Freightliner that was headed through the Calexico Inspection Facility after entering the U.S. from Mexico.
The trailer was supposed to be hauling water heaters, but drug dogs sniffed out boxes of marijuana near the trailer’s rear doors. Eventually, officers said they found marijuana filling most of the top half of the trailer.
The Sun reported that driver Ricardo Torres Villa, 28, of Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico, was booked for felony possession of marijuana and felony transportation for sales.

I realize this trailer was loaded in Mexico and Swift as a company probably had nothing to do with the drugs, however, it can't be good for their public image. Especially in light of the recent raid of the licensing office on their company property in Memphis,TN.

Anybody want to buy some Swift equpment cheap?

New Mexico Port of Entry catches trucks hauling drugs all the time and they aren't Swift trucks. Why is it people are so jealous of the success of Swift Transportation that they have to do everything they can to try to make it look bad? The company you drive for is not perfect and has problems; because all companies do. Any truck coming across the border can be hauling drugs. But hundreds of Swift trailers come across the border every day and DO NOT have drugs in them.

It is time people grow up on here and quit putting down one or two companies just because it is the "in" thing to do in this industry. If Swift was such a terrible company they would never have made it to the size they are. They have most of the major retailers in this country as customers and those customers consistently give them awards for being the best hauler of their freight, even though these same retailers use other companies to haul their freight as well. Maybe that is it, people put Swift down because they are so successful. You just keep poking fun at them and they just keep adding customers and dollars to the bottom line. Why? Because the people the trucking industry hauls for (the shippers and receivers) know a good company when they see one; one that will get the job done and one who has enough drivers to ensure their freight can get there when they need it there.

My thought too !!! No wonder Swift keeps drivers heck they furnish them plenty of weed.As for as the custmers they like anyone that hauls cheap When the Mexican trucks get here tey will be hauling for them and recieving awards.Just like they will probaly get a lot of the union frieght.Drugs might be loaded on the trailer in Mexico but its still on the companys trailer with company truck pulling it.Driver & Co. is respable for whats on load.

What are you smoking? :biggrin_25523: Swift has a lot of business because they are CHEAP. Low wages. Quick, shoddy training, half ### maintenance, etc. Same as Werner, Stephens, CR England, and a bunch of others who do everything they can to stretch or break the rules. Go call another desperate fool Mr. Recruiter. :biggrin_2559:

Have you driven for them or just repeating what you heard? I drove for them and did not have shoddy training. They have a very detailed 42 day process which both trainer and trainee must sign off. I could have signed off things that I had not been trained on but I continually approached my trainer and asked to learn those things and more. Their mileage rates may be lower then others but they kept me moving. You can $0.50 per mile but if you only run 1500 miles you get less than someone making $0.30 per mile while driving 2700 miles.

And by the way, I am not smoking anything. It is just time we get rid of the negativity in this industry and particularly on these forums. Your day would be much better if, rather than putting others down, you would be kind and courteous. Most people put others down to make themselves look bigger but, truth be known, putting others down makes one look small.
