A number of companies use their own trucks but when the freight surges such as before holidays then they use outside carriers to pick up the slack. WalMart does not have their drivers haul much refrigerated because they don't like their guys driving after dark and the majority of the grocery loads are night loads.

Bad news for Harris Teeter drivers? Or maybe not so bad?

    (Reuters) - Kroger Co
said on Tuesday it would buy regional grocer Harris Teeter Supermarkets Inc in a $2.5 billion deal, the latest in a string of grocery industry consolidations. [...]

The combined business will operate 2,631 supermarkets in 34 states and the District of Columbia, with over 368,300 employees. Harris Teeter has a non-union workforce, while Kroger largely operates with unionized staff.[...]

Harris Teeter top management will continue to lead the business out of its North Carolina headquarters. No store closures are expected, though the U.S. Federal Trade Commission will be expected to look at their overlapping presence in Raleigh, North Carolina; Charlottesville and Hampton Roads, Virginia; and Nashville, Tennessee. [...]

Anybody knows if mergers like this in the past changed company position on the trade union? Will they live everything as it is, or do total makeover? Closest Krogers DC's to Harris Teeter's are in Atlanta and Salem, Virginia. Do they operate there their own trucks, or use outside carriers?

I guess now Harris Teeter stores in Nashville will be served by Kroger's Memphis DC. Stores in DC area also can be taken over by Kroger. Looks like majority of HT stores served by Indian Trail DC will be safe for now, unless Kroger decide to fire us all and use USX, or Schneider instead.

They hire 3rd party companies to deliver there stuff to stores. It's only a matter of time for the company drivers.

Jonah... can you give me a little more info about driving for them. I've talked to Alan Smith and he told me to apply in March because I had an accident that will be 3 years old in March. But I want to make sure that this will be a good move. I know you said that they start out at 17 dollars an hour and I also read that you said you can easily gross $1000 in a bad week. So are they paying overtime or what. Because even at 15 percent better efficiency that still in a 10 hour day is only like $190 a day. any information you can give me about Harris Teeter would be greatly appreciated. I'm trying to decide whether to apply and Harris Teeter or as a line haul driver for Old Dominion.

Jonah can you please elaborate on the pay. when you say you can easily gross $1000 in a bad week are you speaking about new drivers or are you speaking about drivers who have been there for more than 2 or 3 years? I live very close to Harris Teeter. I've also spoke to Alan Smith. He told me to reapply in March. So I'd like to know from a driver what I'm getting myself into.

Hey jonah! You still at Harris Teeter? I know they just merged with Kroger so I was wondering how it was. I know you last post was a while ago but I figured I would give it a shot. My current job is very similar to yours with the six month bids and the seniority list. I want to apply but by doing so I will be moving my whole family. My family is ready for the change. Any information will be very very helpful. Thanks a lot.
