How can a CMV inspection possibly not be logged as on-duty not driving? (I know lots do it that way, but that isn't my question)

No, those items are not required. Aside from the graph grid, here is the list of what is required, everything beyond that is optional.

The "FROM" and "TO" are not required by DOT. Never have been in my experience.

Neither is the recap on the right edge of most paper logs, or inside the front cover. That is for the driver's benefit only.

More like in the absence of any federal law, state and local laws, if there are any, apply. The feds say nothing at all about firearms in CMV's so you'd have to check the regular laws on transporting firearms in a vehicle. Of course they're all different wherever you go. There's no way to be in compliance everywhere.

Last time I ran logs I logged 15 every morning for the pretrip and just flagged the post trip. I was inspected in Indiana at the big weigh station on 70 and handed the old man over a months worth of logs just to see if he'd find anything. He didn't, other than making sure to write the BoL numbers on the logs every day. I wasn't sure that was still required or what. It is.

We just came off a Focused Compliance Review (Audit). I asked this very specific question about Pre-trip.

According to the D.O.T auditor, one must pre-trip and flag it on duty/not driving and requires a minimum of 15 minutes. However, post-trip is not applicable. It seems more so that they are looking to see a pre-trip on a log. Of course, it's a plus if a driver does pre-trip and post-trip. The Auditor did though in-fact ding us a minor violation on BOL#'s not being filled in.

I must not be doing something right. I cannot find a minimum time for pre-trip inspection in the regulations.

Hey Scale, I also questioned him on that aswell. It's not in the FMSCA regs yet he says it's required. He told me it's "one of those type of things that you just have to do..".

Hey Scalemaster, I have a dumb question. When looking at severity of violation, like when you determine if it's an egregious violation, do you look at a single violation that is greater than 3 hours, of if you had an 11 and 14 that ran 1.5 hours from the same period would that also be an egregious violation, or just two 1.5 hour violations?

"If you cannot comprehend what the law says, it is not a problem for anyone else. It is quite clear."

    ... sorry... couldn't resist.

Oh, you gotta "do it", but they don't tell you how long you have to take.
There is a whole list of things you are required to check on a PTI, all you have to do is check it all and log the on-duty time you actually spent doing it. If it is less than 15 minutes, you put the time in the remarks (flagging it).
