Hi everyone, I'm scheduled to start with prime on March 4th and need to go through the psd and TNT training. I have my class A CDL and have three years over the road experience but it's been 13 years since I drove. I read somewhere in a forum here that said prime wants you to give up your CDL and start over, is this true? No one mentioned this to me in recruiting and I don't think it makes sense. Thanks!

I do understand about having to do all the training again and have no problem with that. I just don't understand giving up my license just to turn around and get it back again.

As far as I understand that's not the case any longer. Since you've been off the road so long what Prime does is to run you through the entire training program including 100 hours with a CDL instructor in lieu of a "refresher course." You would have to run the entire 40,000-mile TnT training cycle in any event, but this will give you 10,000 miles credit plus the time with an instructor to make sure you don't have any bad habits. It turns out (from insurance industry statistics) that experienced drivers returning from a long layoff are very liable to get in a serious accident. None of us want that- especially you, so they run folks in your situation through the whole deal. Good luck and welcome back!

Thanks IP. I've been reading your blogs for quite a while now and you are truly a wealth of knowledge! I hope I get a chance to meet you someday. I writing this from sunny Dubai in the middle East and will be returning back to the U.S later this month, been here for an unexpected four months now after my wife was in an accident and broke her leg and needs surgery and I had to look after our children and her. She works at a private school here and our three boys go there.
Anyway thanks again, and I'm really looking forward to getting back behind the wheel!!

I have my CDL with only 6 months experience 5 years ago and the recruiter I just talked to a few days ago stated that I would have to do the on the road training, do the 10,000 miles, 75 hours, which is unpaid. Then have to come back and do the road test. If I pass that then I will go out for another 30,0000 miles and that will be paid the $600 a week. I asked if I would have to do all the class work and he told me no. So you would just keep your current CDL. He did tell me that I had to bring $100 for admin fees. I haven't been approved yet.
They are doing my background stuff still. Hopefully I will be able to get on with this company. It will be worth going through the 10k miles unpaid to get on with this company. The pay after you get your truck for a newbie is the best out there that I have come across.
