If you are considering or have recently launched into a career in trucking, I would caution you to be very sure this is really what you want to do. I used to be self employed. When the economy tanked, just like thousands of other people, I couldn't find work. I turned to trucking. After +- 6 years(can't say I didn't really try). I'm moving on. Half joking, I've been saying that 'driving a truck is dirty dangerous work that doesn't pay very well'. Week before last, I got a little sideways southbound on 90 in OR. I got away with it, no one hurt and no damage done. The incident confirmed my feeling that I shouldn't be a truck driver. But there's more. I'm tired of waiting till I have enough gallons to take a shower. I'd like to pay a fair price for the things I need at truck stops. Compare the price of a gallon of water at Walmart vs any truck stop. I'm tired of peeing in bottles, bags and parking lots. I'm tired of sleeping in a small bunk with no HVAC. I'm tired of the hostility from other drivers, shippers, receivers, law enforcement etc. I'm really tired of dirt-bag DMs.The list goes on. So, I'm throwing in the towel. Remember when you talk to drivers that SAY they're doing pretty well, ask more questions. Like, who do they drive for and HOW LONG? What do they haul? And how often do they get home? Good luck.

Seems to me with 6 years of exp. you should have been able to find a decent company.

Hey good luck to you! Six years means you lasted longer than what 99% of the people who go into trucking? I enjoy driving a truck, but all that other stuff you mention I discovered after two months in trainers trucks and I totally understand your choice, it's the same one I made for pretty much the same reason. I quit because I could, my wife got a job with health Insurance and a decent paycheck. I don't regret my time in the truck, in fact on my long weekends like this weekend I sometimes come over to TTR to I guess relive my "glory days". But one of my best life decisions I made was to quit the truck and go back to school. I now make more money than 95% of all truck drivers and work fewer hours --- but strangely enough I still miss parts of trucking. I hope you have something lined up, because it can be real hard for some people to find another way to make a living.

I think you shouldn't throw the towel without trying a decent local job.
