Why would you pass on Walmart? If you have a clean record and are close to retiring age they would jump on you like a fat kid on an ice cream cone.

Don't pay the naysayers any mind. I don't blame you. I hung it up after ten years to try something new, and I consider myself fairly well accomplished as a driver. Yeah, the nature of the jobs I held meant I didn't get as many miles as someone running OTR for the same amount of time, but they weren't doing what I was, either. I like driving, but I just don't see that great of a future in it. Couple that with the lack of local jobs... well, not so much the lack of local jobs... those are actually fairly abundant... but the lack of good local driving jobs... and my own desire to seek new horizons... I still get a little wheeling in on the side, and even miss it sometimes, but I'm happier overall doing what I'm doing now.
It's not for everyone, and don't consider yourself a washout for it. With six years in, you've outlasted most of your peers for sure, and you gave it a chance. Sometimes it's just time to move on. That time came for me, and it seems that it has for you, as well.
Best of luck to you in your future ventures.

My support structure for the first 16 years I was driving consisted of ME. Reading books on the industry, and later reading direct from the Internet, including background information on any carrier I would consider applying to. That is how I educated myself on the field of work I am in. I worked 16 hours a day years ago when drivers were only required to take an 8 hour break. There was still always down time periodically while loading and unloading that I used to read and master the job.

Your original post described some very poor work conditions. Do not expect those work conditions to magically change for the better. Move on and do a better job screening the next employer, or expect more of the same. These piss poor carriers exist because drivers like you allow them to treat you poorly. You want success? Then get off your butt and make it happen. Plenty of opportunities to make money in trucking or elsewhere. There is not Auto-pilot for success. Wake up and achieve it, rather than dream of it.

The point of the post was to get candidates and novices to really look at what they are getting themselves into. I didn't. But once I got started, I wanted to see it through. There's no doubt in my mind I WAS a good driver. CSA=0. No tickets, incidents or accidents. But I shouldn't be driving a truck. I do get easily distracted. And adding in all the other things I really dislike about the job, I could have saved myself a lot of trouble.

i hope you are ready to tell them guys who work for these piss mega carriers that they allow the company to treat them poorly because they don't get treated any better than that.

I agree you save yourself a lot of trouble, unsafe lane change, reckless endangerment, voluntary or unvoluntary manslaughter, weight limit, truck restriction lol

The compensation wasn't better than I was getting at the time with Knight. Might have been a better future. But I would have had to move again. Seems like every 18 to 36 months I pack - up and move to a new job.

When a driver does not know the law and how the FMCSR is there to protect their health and well being, it is no surprise these same drivers find themselves stuck working for a POS carrier. These same drivers are their own worst enemy and as a result many POS carriers just discard them like used Kleenex. When a driver willingly breaks the law, putting their own livelihood at risk, for a carrier who is nothing more than the devil with a smile, it is no wonder conditions never change at many of these 100%+ turnover rate carriers. These carriers just see such a driver as nothing more than number.
