Is it possible to work for a year and then live off of the earnings for a period of time and then when you run out of money, work again for 6months to a year and then live off the money saved again, then work again, etc?
Can you take breaks in between your trucking career?

Doubt any company would allow that...you want to change jobs every year or so....besides unless you can live on a really tight budget , you won't make enough , even if you get a really good paying trucking job to start with...so the short answer to your question would be a No from me....

Lol
...you sound like an old time o&o
Yeah sure can buddy.
Have your own equipment. -
Every time you take a break, you're going to have to start at the bottom. When you walk away from Truckin, it'd better be for good. If you are needing a break before you start, perhaps you need to do a self check to see if this is really what you want to do.

and I agree... my answer is no...
For several reason. First, unless its a seasonal job, I wouldn't think any company would let you come & go. Most companies really don't event want you to take a weeks vacation, much less months off.
The 2nd is, personally, I do ok, but I certainly cant take time off like that. I have bills to pay every month. If your 21 & still mooching off mom & dad for a place to stay & free meals.. maybe so. But I have to save as I go along because we are usually off from our industry for the last two weeks of the year. That's missing two weeks pay.
Now, I understand what your saying because I had an old friend that was for the most part a hermit & lived in the woods and hunted & fished for his food as well as a skilled trapper. He lived in his parents old 3 room wood frame house.... literally in the woods. He was a welder by trade. He would work three months a year making big bucks on jobs working 12 or 14 hr days, seven days a week for 3 months. Once he had $20,000 or so in his pocket, he would quit, come home, fish & hunt & do whatever he wanted until next year. But his situation was very unique. He owned a small house, wasn't married, had no children & did not accumulate bills.
But, back to your situation... 99.9 % of the people cant do that now days. So, again, my answer is no.Last edited: Feb 18, 2014

Maybe like drive in the oilfield in the Summer to help pay for college. Or drive a couple years and go live in the Phillipinnes for a year that's something I would do. You can live cheap over there. I wouldn't mind lying around on the beach for a year. Problem is most companies require you to take a refresher a course if you haven't been driving in 3-6 months.
But I like the idea, especially for the young single guy. Put your stuff in storage, make some money and travel the world a little. But of course it usually takes a couple years before you're really making decent money in trucking. -
Didn't specify how long you wanted to take off? Try mamo transportation might be an option for you.

You might want to consider some of the several companies that offer schedules like 7 on 7 off, or 14 on 7 off. They are out on the road 7 days then home 7. There are many companies that offer this, seems like more are every day, some of them I know of are Schneider, Roehl, Marten, Knight, etc.
