just had a brief talk with the owner of a 150 truck fleet trucking company here in the midwest...I asked about if i bought a truck would he be able to put me to work...well he said no need to buy a truck that he would bring me in as a fleet operator not owner operator...he would sell me trucks from their fleet which is 2012 cascadias with 450,000 -500,000 miles on them...he said i would be responsible for finding good drivers that meet their hiring criteria...now keep in mind that this owner that i am speaking of is a good friend...he said whenever i wanted to bring on a another driver he would simply sell us another truck from their fleet...he knows one of my passions is to own a small fleet...i am sure he will work with me and show me the ropes after all i did some research and his company is doing well over $20,000,000 annually...now the payment for the truck(s) will be deduducted from weekly settlements...insurance will be deducted...we are scheduled to have a meeting in two weeks to go over evrything...my question is this...do fleet owners get paid more per mile since i would be hiring other drivers to drive for me..also i would definitely be a driver also i can't just sit around an office or something...i must drive...i did some numbers and unless i got some very good mileage rates i don't see how this would be beneficial to me...until we have our meeting i don't know what my rate of pay will be...he also said i would be responsible for maintenance up keep on the trucks...they could take so much per mile and put that into a maintenance account for me....can anybody give me some sound advice on this..
do fleet operators make good money???

I have "no" experience input to put into this but have to ask you if you have some money ? What if truck no. 1 breaks down right off the bat ?
From what you posted, what will you be doing or getting that is any different then any other lease purchase - just asking ....thanks. -
Do you want to remain friends with him?
281ric, unloader and blairandgretchen Thank this. -
To answer the question, fleet owners CAN make good money, it just depends on the compensation schedule that is offered by the carrier they are leased to in your case. And don't forget, the less he pays and the more you have to pay a driver, the less you will make. And if you get a bad driver that tears up the truck, there is all that cost incurred to fix the mess. Lots to consider.
blairandgretchen Thanks this. -
what would worry me with this deal is him not wanted to add more trucks but sell you his trucks, sounds like a glorified lease purchase, with you then becoming the employer and being liable for the workers comp, matching ss, unemployment etc, that he is paying now. which is scheme behind lease purchase, to remove an employee from the books and have him work as a contractor?
to remain friends, run don't walk from this.Derailed, rank, 281ric and 1 other person Thank this. -
Sounds like y'all won't be friends anymore by this time next year!
281ric Thanks this. -

Just a guess here but since your friend couldn't come out and just tell you what the rate is he's probably not too proud of it. I could be wrong but usually if someone is offering something good they'll tell you. That will be the buck fifty a mile range give or take which is not profitable nor worth the headache for your risk but this would be typical standard flat rate per mile as any other 150 or 1,500 truck fleet offers single o/o and fleets. Just because you have a fleet does not mean he will pay you more from what I have seen. For you to be asking basic questions, such as in your other thread about rates, I have to wonder whether you're really up to the task. Passion is good but if that's all you've got... have to agree with others about losing a friend. Friendship is a two way street maybe your friend is offering up something different and better than the usual rip off contracts. Even so you could still lose a friendship nothing is a given in trucking even if the money is there, things can and do go wrong.

it's not that he won,'t tell me we just talked real briefly...but we have a scheduled meeting coming up...and all i am doing is just trying to get some basic info...i am very knowledgeable but there are a lot of things i am not knowledgeable about...i have been a company driver for 16 years i have never inquired about this aspect of truckin simply it wasn't time for me to move on...well now is that time...i am just trying to get a feel as to whether i will pursue or not...it would be impossible to go into all the details...this friend has donated over $200,000 to my outreach ministry, he's on my board of advisors for my outreach ministry...he comes and we go out and feed the hungry...he has a truckin company as well as a leading international logistics company...I don,t think he's in this to rip me off...but he did say i will take u by the hand and show you how to be successful in this truckin industry...he's not going to baby me but will put me on the right path to success...after all his success speaks for itself...so i was just trying to get a feel from other drivers about this...
