$150,000/ year is an amazing wage. That is more than double what the thread I referred to indicates and far more than the few O/O's I've spoken to in person.

You must be into something super-specialized. What do you do?

I'm not a o/o. I have a couple buddies who are though and that's their weekly bring home after fuel at least. I don't know the rest of their bills behind the scenes. I do know their trucks are paid for.

    Totally possible,
Say the independent averages 250k for the year, spends 1/3 on fuel, leaving 165,000.
Paid off equipment (truck and trailer) should save 4,000 a month or 48,000 a year.
Insurance even at 10,000 brings it to 155,000.
Repairs, choose your own number, but we can see that 150 definitely isn't totally out of the question ....

I would prefer to take less and leave money in the company, expand it ... shoot for 250k later if you can successfully drive the desk while others drive ...

Oh boy the poo is getting deep in here. What planet are you guys on? I've been owner operator for a little over two years now and let me tell you it's not all it's cracked up to be!!! You better get your boot straps on and dig your heels in cuz it's going to be a bumpy ride. Huge difference between being a driver and being an owner operator!!! 250K you better be running team!!! or robbing a bank!!! Picking up feet here cuz it's getting deep in here!!!

250k is NOT a realistic number for an independent ....

so lets see ..To make $250k per yeae..A guy must average $5,000 per week for 50 weeks...

Ok, So.....Now your working 50 weeks per year 5-6 days per week without ANY vacation time...maintenance time..Bereavement time or anything.

Next.....Who is paying rates to gross $5k per week on LEGAL freight?? Maybe if your pulling 100% of your own customer freight withoutr using ANY brokers ever.....You MIGHT make $5,000 a week.

PLUS.....Do you realize what you put your body throuigh? It will get very old killing yourself 5-6 days per week running What...2500-3000 miles a week to justify that number?

Can it be done? Im sure it can......But its not worth the mental/physical stresses that go along

I made $163,000 in 2013 .....Worked 44 weeks (6 weeks vacation and 2 weeks maintenance)

Mostly working with brokers and some of my own outbound customers........

You guys out there boasting about your $250,000 or better per year should stop and think about quality of life too.....I'll bet my bottom dollar that you became very tired and crabby..And took out a lot of anger on your spouses/family.........

Yeah, common sense tells me you are right. I was curious why drivers posting here will throw out all kinds of big looking numbers but never say what they actually earn. I decided to press a bit and and was told, it seemed : "$150/k per year stupid, just do the math!"

According to job statistic sites I've visited, O/O's do not generally earn more than company drivers. It seems to me (please give some insight if I got this wrong) is that most who go O/O do it for reasons other than money. Maybe more flexibility with their work schedule or maybe just ego.

If it is a superior way to earn a living then I'm more than interested but the slippery way most drivers talk about it here raises doubts. This seems a strangely elusive subject.

It depends who they lumped in with "owner/operators" ... Would you consider someone an owner/operator if they own their own truck, but lease on to a company paying by the mile? What if it is a L/P, are they also considered o/o? Also - did they state the amount of days driving comparatively? What if the "o/o" made the same money, but did it in 10 months instead of 12? Gotta know all the details of the study ...

Are you saying that was your earning after all expenses except taxes?

All of the above far as I'm concerned. My line of inquiry is about possible income. Some people here are claiming $150,000/yr or more and seem to be implying that is not out of the ordinary. These claims do not map on to the the job statistics I've seen so naturally I doubt the claims. Still, if these kind of incomes really are possible I want to learn how.
