Hey all. I have question for you. I am getting ready to finish my training time and my trainer and I talked about him taking vacation afterwards. He said he would but he would also like to keep the truck earning. I said well just let me run your truck while you are on vacation. So he is seriously considering it. Our company will pay me .20 per mile (yeah, I know) to run his truck. I told him that he would have to kick in some to even make it worth while. What kind of money should I be looking to make above the .20 per mile? I am thinking that it should be more than i would make as a company driver otherwise why not just upgrade to my own truck and run solo. Thoughts?

Depends on what you would make as a company driver. But you should ask for at least the same if not a little more.

Also depends on whether or not you get health benefits. Will you have taxes taken out or will you be put on a 1099. If you have to do your own taxes I would ask for more, if you don't get insurance benefits I would ask for substantially more.

If your taxes and benefits remain the same then it depends on what you want. If he allows you to get home more often than your company would, then that is a benefit in itself. Also the slightly less stringent rules being on an o/o truck vs. company truck.

I'd like to know what company would pay an owner op to hire a driver, unless I'm mistaken and he's not an o/o. It just seems weird to me that they would help pay your wages.

Btw I think the industry average for starting pay is .28 a mile but if you would make more as a company driver use that rate as a base.

To me it would be worth low pay for a week or two just to get some solo time. Even if he's a good trainer, you will thoroughly enjoy being solo for a few days.

Your trainer owns his truck? If i were a O/O i would never let a newbie run my truck by himself. But, why would you ever work for a company offering .20 per mile. If he owns the truck, you should be an employee of his while running his truck, not the company. What the advantage of running his truck vs running a company truck? You should get atleast what you would as a company driver. If as a company driver you get 20/mile then run.

If you are about to finish training get into your own truck. Why would you work another week or two just to keep his truck running for what seems to me to be training pay?

If it is OK to run the truck by yourself, what is the point of running for .20? Only to go back training when he comes back? I don't get it. Either you are ready to truck or you are not. And if you are not ready to be by yourself, running his truck will not be a good idea.

Holy crap thats a garbage wage. Nothing personal but it's an industry killer when people drive at these rates, training or not. Thanks a lot
