Because of expectation RM. Meat haulers have 20 hour breaks everyday. Loads come out usually 10pm-2am. Now when he had his first break an experienced meat hauler would know what's ahead of him. Instead of laying the little head down you force yourself to stay up in the safety of a truck stop. Maybe get you about 4 hours sleep at the tail end. Then when you get your dispatch you move to the shipper or you continue to stay where you are and move to the shipper at the last moment. In the course of 20 hours you can get you 3-4 hours sleep before the run.

You all act like this guy was surprised? Nope he wasn't surprised if he had experience in the business.

It's a good thread and maybe you all are getting a view of how it is in the business.

When you take your brk and then have to take another brk how can u get to sleep? You have 20 yrs under your belt so u have to know how this industry works.Loads first safety when the company finds the time. Not every driver is like you.If you're tired you're tired. He gave it his all and just couldn't drive any further. He about fell asleep. He did the right thing stopping.

    It's not ALL companies. .

Mine (to my surprise) has actually said to me. ."I know you had a break and now have been up all day, can you take this load, Or we will find another one"

They can see your hours. . They know what is/has happened. . No load. . No company is worth hurting yourself or someone.

I USED to break every HOS rule there was. .I would take a 3, 000 mile run from Yakima to Hunts Point and have it there in 2 1/2 days. . Thinking the whole way, what a great thing I'm doing for the company. BS!

We have got to get past this super trucker mentality. . No one is going to think what a great job your doing if you run into a school bus full of kids. . crush a mom or dad on their way to work. The job is black and white. . You're either legal or you're illegal.

Fatigued driving is an out of service violation. Period

Forget the whole "Run the load jumping jack thing" --calling the "cops" on your driver WTF.
Abe: "officer, do you have a minute ?" "I want to show you why you are really here" -- yep that's right K&B thinks your all a bunch of "Doughnut eating Alarm Clocks" and have nothing better to do than wake their drivers up.
Wooly Rhino: it is legal to tape record others without informing them, depending on what state your in --now i dont know how that would go as far as who has to be in the "legal to record state" or if both parties have to be?
Pennsylvania: you cannot record someone unless they are informed you are doing so.

How do you know that he had not stressed himself to the limit the day before doing exactly what you said.

I do not know if it was a reefer or not. The point is that he told them many times that he would not be rested and someone should take the load.

The driver is in charge of the truck and must be safe.

Why is everyone taking the side when the company is pushing him to run illegal as a tired trucker?

    An experienced meat hauler?

Not every company exclusively runs meat. It's clear he had no idea what load he was going to get (most companies don't predispatch you). So, he did his ten, made his delivery and sat waiting for a reload. He got it, was to pick up late that night and required him to have a full clock to run it straight through.

You don't see the problem there? Complaining about how 'that's just the way it's done' doesn't make it the right way. And saying you can wake up 'like flipping a switch' is not productive, nor safe. The fact someone associated with this site is advocating for that type of outlaw, drive-tired or hopped up on caffeine, and taking jumping jack breaks is no better than this dispatcher.

If his company wanted him to run this way, they could've given him the assignment the day before. So he would've know to stay awake a bit the night before since he'd only need a few hours of cognition before going back into a ten hour.

And lastly, you're complaining about his videoing this encounter. Your ignorance of who he is and what he does reeks of self-righteousness. He makes videos about trucking and posts them on Youtube. I've seen his videos before. Him filming this with his dashboard camera is not a surprise. He's trying to let truckers and non-truckers alike know how the business operates. I don't think he was expecting the ####-storm the night dispatch tried to unleash.

But, CondoCruiser, if this is how you expect truckers to be treated, how their lives are to be treated, and how their compensation are to be treated... I think you should realize which side of the argument you're on. And it's not for the trucker.
